About the Bavaria C42

The C42 is not a Cruiser 42 with a new badge. The C-line is a different design school: Cossutti Yacht Design replaced Farr, and the result is a boat with a blunt stem, a beamy bow and hard chines running forward — a shape borrowed from modern offshore racing rather than from the previous generation of cruisers.

The point of all that is form stability. A hull that is wide and chined stands up to its sail plan using its shape rather than relying on lead in the keel, which means the boat can carry more sail for the same amount of heel and can give the interior volume that a narrow hull cannot.

In practice it feels different from a Cruiser of similar size: stiffer, more planted, and happier being pushed. It also feels wider below, because it is.

Who it suits

Crews who want a modern hull
If you have sailed older production cruisers and found them soft, the chined C-line hull is a noticeably different experience.
A family or two couples
Three cabins in typical charter trim, with the beam carried aft giving proper double berths rather than wedges.
Skippers who enjoy trimming
The boat rewards being sailed. It carries sail well and accelerates when you get it right.
Less suited to crews expecting a Cruiser
Different designer, different hull, different feel. Not better or worse than the Cruiser line — different.

Layout & life aboard

Beam carried aft
The wide chined hull means the aft cabins get real width rather than tapering away.
Bright, modern saloon
The C-line interior is a clear step on from the Cruiser generation in light and finish.
Deck layout options
Bavaria offers the C-line with different cockpit and deck arrangements, so two C42s can be laid out differently.
Worth looking at the actual photos of the boat you are booking rather than the brochure.
Twin wheels and open transom
Bathing platform between the helms, which is where the boat gets used at anchor.

Under sail

Form stability from the chines
Hull shape does the work the keel used to do. The boat stands up to its sail plan instead of heeling away from it.
Upwind
Good. The stiff hull lets you keep sail up longer, which is what actually makes a cruising boat point well.
Blunt bow
Volume forward keeps the bow up and the boat level rather than burying it when reaching hard.
Under power
Single engine with a saildrive. The beam makes it feel planted, but it also means more boat to stop.

Worth knowing before you book

Do not assume it is a Cruiser
Different hull, different designer, different handling. If someone in the crew sailed a Cruiser 41 last year, this will feel unfamiliar.
Check the deck layout you are getting
The C-line is offered with meaningfully different cockpit arrangements.
Keel draft
As always, it decides your anchorages more than your speed.
The beam at the dock
A wide 42-footer takes a wider berth than its length suggests, which matters in older Mediterranean harbours.

Frequently asked questions

For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.

Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (Port of Lefkas).

Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.

Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
