About the Bavaria Cruiser 46

The Cruiser 46 is the boat that made Bavaria the default choice in Mediterranean charter fleets. Farr Yacht Design drew the hull, BMW Designworks had a hand in the deck and interior, it took European Yacht of the Year in 2015, and it has been in production since 2014 — which is why there are so many of them in Croatia and Greece.

Farr is a racing office, and it shows in a way that matters on a charter week: the boat has a proper sailing hull underneath the accommodation rather than a shape bent entirely around bed count. It is not a performance yacht, but it moves, holds an angle, and does not need a gale to get going.

Above deck the brief was volume. Headroom below is generous, the saloon is wide, and the four-cabin three-heads charter layout is one of the few at this length where a full crew does not spend the week queuing.

Who it suits

Two families, or a large group of friends
The four-cabin, three-heads layout is the reason this boat is everywhere in charter — it genuinely takes eight or nine people.
Three-cabin versions exist and are far more comfortable for six.
Crews who want space without a catamaran budget
Interior volume and headroom that compete with boats costing considerably more to charter and to berth.
Skippers who want a boat that sails
The Farr hull means this is not simply a floating apartment. Trim it properly and it rewards you.
Less suited to crews who want the newest systems
The model has been built for a decade. Charter examples range from nearly new to well used, and the difference is in the equipment rather than the design.

Layout & life aboard

Headroom and width
The saloon is unusually open for the length, with standing headroom that taller crew notice immediately.
Four cabins, three heads
The charter layout avoids the usual problem of too many people sharing too few bathrooms.
Worth confirming, because three-cabin two-head boats also carry this name.
Twin wheels and a big cockpit
A long cockpit table and seating for the whole crew, with the helms well aft and clear of the seating area.
Straightforward below
Nothing clever or fragile. Lockers, berths and the galley are where you expect them to be, which matters when nine people are living aboard.

Under sail

Farr hull underneath
The boat was drawn by a racing office and it behaves accordingly: it tracks, it holds an angle, and it accelerates rather than wallows.
Upwind
Good for a volume cruiser, especially with the deeper keel. It will sail to windward rather than motor there.
Easy to depower
Reefing and a furling headsail mean the boat is quickly made manageable when the afternoon breeze fills in.
Under power
Single engine and a saildrive, with a long hull. Prop walk is noticeable and useful once you know which way it goes.

Worth knowing before you book

Confirm the cabin and heads count
Three-cabin and four-cabin versions both exist under this name, and the difference decides the week for a group of eight.
Ask the boat's age and sail condition
A decade of production means a wide spread. Sails and canvas are where the age shows first.
When were the sails last replaced is the one question worth insisting on.
Keel draft
Shallow and deep versions were both built; it decides which anchorages you can use.
Learn the prop walk
A 46-foot single-screw monohull backing into a tight berth needs a plan made before you start.

Frequently asked questions

For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.

Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (Nikiana Marina).

Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.

Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
