About the Dufour 430
Dufour's Grand Large line is drawn by Umberto Felci, and the current generation did something the brochures understate: the beam is carried much further forward than on the Dufours that came before. That one change is why the interior feels like a bigger boat, and it made a different galley layout possible.
Instead of a galley squeezed along one side of the saloon, the 430 can put it forward across the boat, with work surfaces on both sides of the centreline. Two people can cook without getting in each other's way, which anyone who has catered for eight in a narrow galley will recognise as a genuine improvement rather than a styling choice.
Outside, the transom carries a barbecue, a sink and a preparation area built into its top, so whoever is cooking faces the cockpit instead of turning their back on it. For a charter week where most meals happen aboard, that is the detail you end up appreciating most.
Who it suits
- Crews who cook aboard
- The transom galley and the forward galley below are both built around the idea that cooking is a social activity, not a chore done in a corner.
- A family or two couples
- Three cabins in typical charter trim, with interior volume that comes from hull shape rather than from cramming.
- Skippers who like a lively boat
- Felci hulls have a sportier reputation than the German and other French volume builders, and the boat rewards being trimmed.
- Less suited to very large groups
- This is a comfortable six-person boat rather than a packed eight-person one.
Layout & life aboard
- Galley across the boat, forward
- Work surfaces port and starboard of the centreline so two people can prepare a meal at the same time.
- Transom kitchen
- Barbecue, sink and prep area built into the top of the transom, facing into the cockpit.
- Check the gas supply and that the barbecue lights at handover — it is the thing you will use every evening.
- Beam carried forward
- More room in the saloon and the forward cabin than this length usually allows.
- Twin wheels, open cockpit
- A long cockpit table with seating for the whole crew, and the helms far enough aft to stay out of the way.
Under sail
- Felci hull
- A sportier shape than most volume cruisers of this size; it holds an angle and accelerates rather than wallowing.
- Upwind
- Good for a cruiser, particularly with the deeper keel. The boat likes being sailed properly.
- Responsive helm
- More feel through the wheel than the class average, which is part of why people choose Dufour over the alternatives.
- Under power
- Single engine with a saildrive. Predictable, with prop walk you will want to identify early.
Worth knowing before you book
- Test the transom barbecue
- The feature the boat is known for, and the one most likely to be out of gas or missing a part.
- Keel draft
- Shallow and deeper versions exist; it decides which anchorages are open to you.
- Prop walk on day one
- Single screw. Learn which way the stern swings in open water before you need the knowledge.
- Shade over the cockpit
- Confirm a bimini is fitted. The cockpit is the best part of this boat and unusable at midday without one.

Frequently asked questions
For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.
Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (ACI Marina Dubrovnik).
Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.
