About the Lagoon 40
The Lagoon 40 had a hard act to follow. It replaced the 380, a boat couples had loved for years for its size and price, and the brief was to keep that accessibility while bringing the hull and rig up to date. VPLP drew it, le Quément shaped the exterior, Nauta did the interior, and it went into production in 2017.
Like the rest of this generation the mast sits well aft, which shrinks the mainsail, opens the foretriangle and lets the headsail tack itself. On a boat this size that matters more than it does on the big cats: there is less crew, and often only two people who really know what they are doing.
The important thing to understand before you book is that the 40 is a sail-plan boat. The mainsail and self-tacking jib will move it along, but the boat comes alive with a Code 0 or a similar large light sail set from the bow. If one is aboard and someone knows how to use it, this is a quick and pleasant week. If not, you will motor more than you expected in light air.
Who it suits
- One family, or two couples
- The charter layout gives four cabins — one forward and one aft in each hull — which is a lot of boat for its length without being a lot of boat to handle.
- Heads arrangements vary between hulls and build years; worth confirming what you are getting.
- Crews who want a catamaran without the size
- Easier to berth, cheaper to berth, and less intimidating than a 45-footer, while still giving you the flat decks and separate cabins people come to catamarans for.
- Less suited to large groups
- Four cabins fit, but the saloon and cockpit are sized for the boat. Eight adults for a week will feel close.
- If the group is big, the extra few feet of a 42 or 45 buys more than the cabin count suggests.
- Less suited to crews who will not fly a light sail
- Without a Code 0 the boat is slow in under ten knots of breeze. That is the difference between sailing and motoring on a Mediterranean summer afternoon.
- Ask whether one is aboard before you book, and ask the base to show you how it is set.
Layout & life aboard
- One level, as usual
- Galley, saloon and cockpit flow into each other at the same height, with a sliding door between.
- Raised helm to starboard
- A single helm position on the coachroof rather than a flybridge, reached by steps from the cockpit.
- Sight lines are better than on some of the bigger Lagoons but the port quarter is still hidden when backing in.
- Foredeck and trampolines
- The space between the bows is where this boat is best at anchor, and it is proportionally generous for the length.
- Expect to be tidy
- Stowage is sized for the boat, not for the cabin count. Eight people with hard suitcases will struggle.
- Soft bags, and the problem disappears.
Under sail
- The rig
- Mast aft, high-aspect mainsail, short boom, self-tacking jib on a forward track. Tacking is a turn of the wheel.
- The sail that matters
- A Code 0 or equivalent light reaching sail transforms the boat in anything under about ten knots.
- This is the single most useful question to ask the base about inventory.
- Upwind
- Respectable for a fixed-keel cruising catamaran, as long as you do not try to point too high. Crack off a few degrees and the boat goes faster and feels better.
- Under power
- Two engines set wide apart; turning in its own length is routine. Berthing is the easy part.
Worth knowing before you book
- Confirm the light-air sail before you book
- Not every charter 40 carries a Code 0, and the ones that do not are noticeably slower in summer Mediterranean conditions.
- Do not pinch
- Trying to sail this hull close to the wind kills boat speed and makes the motion worse at the same time.
- Bear away ten degrees and you will usually arrive sooner.
- Heads layout varies
- Some boats have small private heads amidships in each hull, others a single larger shared one.
- It matters more than people expect when four cabins are full. Ask before booking.
- Loaded, it sits lower
- A boat this size notices full tanks and a week of provisions more than a bigger cat does.
- Take water on as you go rather than filling everything before departure.

Frequently asked questions
For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.
Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (Marina di Scarlino).
Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.
Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
