About the Lagoon 450 Fly
The Lagoon 450 was the boat that made the flybridge normal on a mid-size cruising catamaran, and the Fly version is the one with the helm and a social deck up on the coachroof. For years it was among the most chartered catamarans anywhere, which is why so many are still working in fleets today.
From the flybridge you see all four corners of the boat. Anyone who has tried to back a catamaran into a Mediterranean berth from a helm tucked down one side will understand immediately why owners put up with the extra height and windage to get it.
It has since been replaced by the 46, and that matters when you are choosing. A 450 F in a charter fleet today has done a lot of seasons. Well-kept examples are excellent value — the layout and sea manners have not dated — but condition varies far more across this model than across a boat that is still in production.
Who it suits
- Families who want space for the money
- Three- and four-cabin layouts with a big saloon and a U-shaped galley, at a price a newer boat of the same size will not match.
- Crews who value visibility over everything
- The flybridge helm is the clearest view you will get of your own boat, which makes manoeuvring in a crowded harbour far less stressful.
- Longer, calmer passages
- Owners consistently report the boat rarely slams — bridgedeck clearance was improved over earlier Lagoons and it shows in trade-wind chop.
- Typical cruising pace is seven to eight knots, occasionally far more surfing down a wave.
- Less suited to crews who want a current boat
- Production has ended. If having the newest systems, sails and electronics matters to you, the 46 is the direct successor.
Layout & life aboard
- The flybridge is the living room
- Helm, seating and sunbathing space in one place above the cockpit, with the best view on the boat.
- It is also where the whole crew wants to be at the same time — shade matters.
- U-shaped galley in the saloon
- Generous worktop and storage on the main level, not buried in a hull.
- Saloon light
- Large glazing keeps the main deck bright; the three-cabin owner version turns a whole hull into a private suite.
- Owner versions are uncommon in charter fleets.
- Engine spaces are tight
- Access to the engines in the stern compartments is restricted, which is worth knowing if anything needs looking at mid-week.
Under sail
- Comfort over speed
- This was never a performance catamaran and does not pretend to be. It is about volume and an easy motion at a reasonable pace.
- Typical pace
- Seven to eight knots is the honest cruising number, with bursts into the low teens surfing in the right conditions.
- Bridgedeck
- Clearance is better than on the Lagoons that came before it, and owners report very little slamming as a result.
- Windage
- The flybridge gives the wind a large surface to push on, under sail and especially while manoeuvring.
- A properly working autopilot is not a luxury on this boat.
Worth knowing before you book
- Condition varies more than on newer models
- These are high-hour boats. Sails, electronics, upholstery and generators age differently from one operator to the next.
- Ask when the sails were last replaced — on an ex-charter boat that one answer tells you a lot.
- Saildrive service history is worth asking about
- Saildrive seals and clutches are the maintenance item owners of this model discuss most often.
- A reputable base will answer this without hesitating.
- Check the autopilot under way
- Windage plus a long day equals a tired helmsman. The pilot is the system you will rely on most.
- The flybridge stairway in a seaway
- Climbing up and down with the boat moving is the most likely place for a fall aboard.
- Worth a word with everyone on day one.

Frequently asked questions
For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.
Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (D-Marin Marina Gouvia).
Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.
Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
