About the Lagoon 46

The Lagoon 46 took over from the 450, which had been one of the most chartered catamarans in the world, and it carries the same idea a generation further. VPLP drew the hulls, Patrick le Quément the exterior, Nauta the interior, and the mast sits well aft in the way that has become the house signature — a smaller mainsail, an open foretriangle and a headsail that tacks itself.

The thing that separates the 46 from its smaller sister is where you steer from. The helm is on a flybridge, the wheel in the middle rather than off to one side, with a hard bimini overhead and lounging space immediately behind you. Winches and all the sail controls come to hand there.

That one decision changes the week. You can see all four corners of the boat from the wheel, which makes berthing a different experience from the boats where you stand on one side and guess at the other. You are also still talking to everyone in the cockpit below rather than being stuck in a separate world. The trade is windage and height: more boat in the air, and a climb every time you go up or down.

Who it suits

Larger groups who still want space
The charter layout puts two cabins in each hull with heads amidships, and the saloon and galley absorb a full crew without feeling crowded.
Owner versions give one hull over to a single suite — rare in charter fleets, worth asking about.
Anyone who dreads berthing
A central flybridge wheel with sight of all four corners is the easiest catamaran position there is for coming alongside or backing in.
If one thing puts you off bareboat chartering, this is the boat that removes it.
Crews who want to be together
The flybridge is a social deck rather than a working platform — shade, seating and the helm in one place.
Less suited to windy harbours and short crews
The flybridge adds height and windage. In a cross-wind the boat wants to sail sideways while you are manoeuvring.
Owners consider a strong autopilot essential rather than optional on this hull.

Layout & life aboard

Flybridge first
Hard bimini, central wheel, lounging aft of the helm, reached from the cockpit on one side and the side deck on the other.
It is where everyone ends up under way and at anchor — plan shade and cushions around it.
Galley in the saloon, to port
A worktop-heavy galley on the main level rather than down in a hull, with proper fridge and freezer space.
Cooking happens in the middle of the party rather than away from it.
Light below
Hull windows and saloon glazing make the cabins notably brighter than earlier Lagoons of this size.
Two ways up, two ways down
Separate access to the flybridge from cockpit and side deck keeps traffic moving when the boat is full.

Under sail

The rig
Mast stepped aft, self-tacking headsail, shorter boom. Designed so one person can work the boat from the flybridge.
Reaching
In a moderate breeze the 46 reaches in the nines and picks up as the wind builds. This is the point of sail the boat is built around.
Upwind
Adequate rather than good. It is a cruising cat with fixed keels; pinching it close just slows it down.
Windage
The flybridge and freeboard give the wind something to push against, under sail and far more noticeably under power.
Allow more room than you think when turning into a berth with wind on the beam.

Worth knowing before you book

Check the autopilot works properly
On a boat with this much windage, hand-steering a long passage is tiring and the pilot is the piece of kit you will lean on.
Ask the base to demonstrate it under way, not just switch it on at the dock.
Going up and down in a seaway
The flybridge is a climb. In a swell, that stairway is the part of the boat most likely to cause a fall.
Worth pointing out to everyone aboard on day one, especially with children or anyone unsteady.
Shade is good, but the sun moves
The hard bimini covers the helm well; the lounging area behind it is exposed for part of the day.
Berth size and cost
Beam plus height makes this an expensive boat to berth in high season, and the suitable spaces go first.
Book ahead in July and August rather than arriving and asking.

Frequently asked questions

For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.

Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (Marina d'Arechi).

Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.

Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
