About the Leopard 45
Leopards are built by Robertson and Caine in Cape Town and drawn by Alex Simonis, and they come at the catamaran problem from a different direction than the French yards. These boats were designed with charter work in mind from the start — a large share of production goes straight into the Moorings and Sunsail fleets, where the same hull appears as the Moorings 4500.
The 45 replaced the long-serving Leopard 44 and took Boat of the Year as best charter boat in 2017. The feature that defines it is the forward cockpit: a second outdoor living space ahead of the saloon, reached through a door in the forward bulkhead, with the hardtop extending over it.
That one idea changes how a hot week works. When the sun is on the aft cockpit at four in the afternoon, there is somewhere else to sit that is shaded and in the breeze. And nobody has to walk round the side deck to get there.
Who it suits
- Families who will be aboard all day
- Two separate outdoor spaces, both shaded, means the crew spreads out instead of competing for the same bench.
- Charter crews specifically
- These boats were designed for charter work rather than adapted to it, and the detailing shows it — robust fittings, simple systems, four cabins and four heads.
- Hot-climate weeks
- The hardtop covering both cockpits is the single most useful thing on a Caribbean or Aegean boat in August.
- Less suited to purists
- A large forward cockpit is a layout traditional offshore sailors argue about. For a week of island hopping it is simply useful.
Layout & life aboard
- The forward cockpit
- A second seating area ahead of the saloon, connected by a door through the bulkhead rather than a walk round the deck.
- Shaded by the hardtop and usually the coolest place on the boat under way.
- Forward-facing galley and dinette
- The saloon looks ahead rather than inwards, so whoever is cooking is still part of what is happening.
- Hardtop over everything
- A solid roof rather than canvas, flowing from the aft cockpit forward.
- Four cabins, four heads in charter trim
- Each cabin has its own bathroom, which is the layout that makes a full boat workable.
- Owner versions are three-cabin and are rare in fleets.
Under sail
- Built heavier, on purpose
- Robertson and Caine build for charter service life rather than for the lightest possible displacement. It is a solid boat.
- Upwind
- Reasonable for a cruising cat but not its strength. As with the type, bearing away a little buys speed and comfort together.
- Reaching
- Where the boat does its best work — steady and level, with the weight making the motion easy rather than skittish.
- Under power
- Two engines well apart. Turning in its own length is routine; this is the easy part of a catamaran.
Worth knowing before you book
- The forward cockpit door is a working part
- It is the thing everyone uses twenty times a day. Check it seals and latches properly at handover.
- Windage from the hardtop
- A solid roof over two cockpits gives the wind a lot to push on when you are manoeuvring.
- Ex-charter wear
- These boats work hard. Sails, upholstery and the dinghy outboard age faster than the hull does.
- Ask when the sails were last replaced.
- Beam and berth cost
- A catamaran berth in high season is scarce and expensive. Plan stops rather than improvising in August.

Frequently asked questions
For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.
Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (Apooiti Marina).
Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.
Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
