About the Beneteau Oceanis 51.1
The 51.1 is the 46.1's bigger sister and shares its thinking: a Finot-Conq hull that flares to a chine above the waterline, Nauta styling, and a boat that is meant to sail rather than simply float people around comfortably.
At this size the extra length buys two different things depending on the layout. In charter trim it becomes a five- or six-cabin boat that takes a large group without anyone sleeping in a saloon conversion. In the lighter layouts it becomes a genuinely fast passage-maker for a small crew.
It is the point in the Oceanis range where a monohull starts competing directly with a mid-size catamaran on space. The honest difference is that the cat gives you more deck and more separation; this gives you better sailing and a berth you can actually book in August.
Who it suits
- Large groups who still want a monohull
- Charter layouts reach five and six cabins, which puts a big party on one boat without the catamaran premium on berthing.
- Crews with some miles behind them
- More sail area and more boat to handle than a 45-footer. A confident skipper gets a lot out of it; a nervous one will find it a lot of boat.
- Longer legs between islands
- Waterline length is speed. On a week where you want to cover ground rather than hop short distances, this is the difference.
- Less suited to a first bareboat week
- Loads are bigger, the boat is heavier and mistakes in a tight harbour cost more. Worth having done a season on something smaller first.
Layout & life aboard
- Cabin count drives everything
- The same hull is sold as a spacious four-cabin boat and as a packed six-cabin charter boat. They are very different weeks.
- Ask how many heads, not just how many cabins — that is what you notice when the boat is full.
- Twin helms and a big cockpit
- Two wheels well aft, a long cockpit table, and a drop-down transom platform between the helms.
- Saloon that works for a crowd
- Dining and galley on one level with enough seating that the whole crew can eat inside when the weather turns.
- Foredeck sunbathing
- The coachroof and foredeck carry the sunbathing rather than the cockpit, which stays a working space.
Under sail
- Form stability from the chine
- The hull carries its sail plan instead of heeling away from it, which is what makes a boat this size feel manageable.
- Upwind
- Strong for a cruiser. Waterline length and a stiff hull mean it keeps driving when a shorter boat would be slamming and slowing.
- Keel and rig vary
- Shallow and deep keels exist, and some boats carry the taller performance rig.
- Draft decides your anchorages; ask before you plan a route around shallow bays.
- Loads are real
- Sheets and halyards on a 51-footer carry serious force. Electric winches, if fitted, are not a luxury item here.
- Confirm what is powered and what is not.
Worth knowing before you book
- Count the heads, not the cabins
- A six-cabin charter boat with too few heads is the most common complaint on boats this size.
- Check which winches are electric
- Hoisting a mainsail this size by hand in a hot marina is a genuinely unpleasant job.
- Ask the base to hoist and reef with you once before you leave.
- Manoeuvring space
- Single engine, long hull, and a lot of windage above the waterline. Many Mediterranean berths are tight for this length.
- A bow thruster, if fitted, changes the week — worth confirming it works.
- Draft and anchorages
- A deep-keel 51 is excluded from shallow bays that a charter 40-footer takes without thinking.

Frequently asked questions
For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.
Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (Skiathos).
Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.
Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
