About the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 410
The 410 took the walk-around deck that Jeanneau introduced on the bigger Sun Odysseys and brought it down to the size most charter crews actually book. Cruising World named it best midsize cruiser over thirty-eight feet in 2019, and the reason is the same one that won the 440 its award: you can walk from the stern to the bow without climbing over anything.
The bow is worth a look when you are standing on the dock. It rakes aft from the waterline and the leading edge barely touches the water, which is a wave-piercing shape rather than a decorative one — it is there to stop the boat stopping dead when it meets a short sea.
The helm seats face forward. It sounds like a small thing until you have spent six hours twisted sideways on a boat that does it the old way.
Who it suits
- First-time bareboat crews
- Safe to move around, easy to steer, small enough to berth without drama, and modern enough that everything works the way you expect.
- Couples sailing short-handed
- One person can go forward safely while the other steers, which is what short-handed sailing actually comes down to.
- Families with children or older guests
- No coamings to trip over is worth more than any amount of interior styling when someone unsteady is aboard.
- Less suited to large groups
- This is a 40-foot boat with 40-foot volume. Push it to the maximum cabin count and the cockpit is what fills up first.
Layout & life aboard
- Walk-around deck
- Side decks slope to cockpit level. You never step over a coaming to go forward.
- Forward-facing helm seats
- Twin wheels with seats arranged so you steer looking ahead rather than over your shoulder.
- The difference shows up on the third hour, not the first.
- Bright saloon for the size
- Hull and coachroof glazing make a 40-footer feel like more boat below than the length suggests.
- Open transom
- Drop-down bathing platform between the helms — the thing you use most at anchor.
Under sail
- Wave-piercing bow
- The bow shape is designed to carry through a short chop rather than slam into it and stop.
- Upwind
- Good for the size, especially on the deeper keel. It holds an angle and keeps moving in light air better than most boats of this length.
- Everything leads aft
- Reefing and halyards come back to the cockpit; nobody needs to go to the mast under way.
- Under power
- Single engine with a saildrive. Light enough and short enough that berthing is genuinely easy once you know the prop walk.
Worth knowing before you book
- Find the prop walk before you need it
- Five minutes in open water on day one saves a stressful arrival on day three.
- Check the keel draft
- Shallow and deeper versions exist. It decides which bays are open to you.
- Bimini, not just a sprayhood
- Shade over the cockpit decides whether anyone sits outside in the middle of a Mediterranean day.
- Reef early rather than late
- A light boat accelerates quickly when the breeze fills in. Putting a reef in before you need it is easier than taking one out after.

Frequently asked questions
For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.
Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (ACI Marina Split).
Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.
Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
