About the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440

The Sun Odyssey 440 is the boat that introduced the walk-around deck, and it won European Yacht of the Year in 2018 largely because of it. The idea is simple enough to sound trivial and turns out to matter enormously: the side decks slope down towards the cockpit instead of sitting above it, so you walk from the transom to the bow without climbing over a coaming.

Spend a week on a boat where every trip forward means stepping up and over a raised edge, usually while the boat is leaning, and you understand what was solved. Nobody is doing gymnastics to reach a fender. Nobody is making the trip forward on all fours. Guests who are not sailors move around the boat without thinking about it.

The rest of the boat follows from the same instinct. Twin wheels with seats that let you steer facing forward, sheets led so the person at the helm can work them, and a hull that sails well enough to make the week interesting rather than merely comfortable.

Who it suits

Mixed crews with non-sailors aboard
The walk-around deck is the single best feature on a charter boat for people who are not confident moving around under way.
If you are taking parents or young children, this matters more than any other difference on this list.
Short-handed couples
Lines come back to the helm and the deck is safe to move along, so one person can go forward while the other steers.
A family or two couples
Charter layouts run to three or four cabins with proper separation between the forward cabin and the aft ones.
Less suited to crews who want maximum interior volume
The sloping side decks give up a little interior width in exchange for the deck. It is a deliberate trade and worth understanding.

Layout & life aboard

The deck is the feature
No coamings to climb. You walk from the bathing platform to the anchor without changing level more than a step.
Helm seats face forward
You sit and steer looking where you are going rather than twisting round, which is the difference between an hour at the wheel and a day at it.
Twin wheels, open transom
Bathing platform between the helms that doubles as the boarding point and the swimming step.
Saloon on one level
Galley and dining in a single bright space with headroom and glazing that make the boat feel bigger than its length.

Under sail

Everything leads aft
Halyards and reefing lines come back to the cockpit, so sail changes happen without sending anyone to the mast.
Upwind
Capable. This is a cruising boat that holds a decent angle and keeps moving rather than wallowing.
Keel options
Shallow and deeper keels were both built; charter boats tend towards the shallower.
It decides your anchorages more than it decides your speed.
Under power
Single engine with a saildrive, moderate windage, predictable in reverse once you know the prop walk.

Worth knowing before you book

Learn the prop walk on day one
Single screw means the stern swings one way. Discover it in open water, not between two expensive neighbours.
Check which lines are where
A lot comes back to the cockpit on this boat, which is good, but the clutch bank takes five minutes to learn.
Ask the base to reef with you once before you leave the dock.
Confirm the shade
A sprayhood is not a bimini. In high summer the difference decides whether the cockpit is usable at midday.
Keel draft and your route
Plan the anchorages after you know the draft, not before.

Frequently asked questions

For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.

Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (La Lonja Marina Charter).

Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.

Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
