About the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 490
The 490 was one of the two boats that launched Jeanneau's walk-around deck, alongside the 440, and it is the one where the idea pays off most. On a boat this length the trip from cockpit to foredeck is long, and on most 49-footers it involves climbing up over a coaming and then walking along a deck above the cockpit.
Here the side decks slope down and meet the cockpit, so the whole deck is one continuous surface. With a full charter crew aboard, half of whom are on holiday rather than on watch, that is the difference between people moving freely and people staying put.
It is a lot of boat — five cabins in charter trim is common — and it sails like a lot of boat, which is to say quickly once it is moving and heavy if you get it wrong in a harbour.
Who it suits
- Large groups
- Charter layouts reach five cabins, which puts a big party on a single monohull without the berthing premium a catamaran carries.
- Crews with real miles behind them
- Sail area and displacement are both substantial. A confident skipper gets a fast, comfortable week; a hesitant one gets a long one.
- Routes with distance in them
- Waterline length does the work. If the plan involves crossing open water rather than hopping bays, this is the right size.
- Less suited to a first bareboat week
- Everything is bigger — loads, momentum, consequences. The 410 or 440 is the better place to start.
Layout & life aboard
- Walk-around deck at scale
- The feature matters most here: a long deck with no level changes, so a full crew moves around safely.
- Cabin count varies a lot
- The same hull exists as a comfortable four-cabin boat and a packed five-cabin charter boat.
- Ask how many heads as well as how many cabins.
- Twin wheels and a long cockpit
- Forward-facing helm seats and enough cockpit for the whole crew to sit down at once.
- Saloon sized for the group
- Galley and dining that genuinely work for eight or ten people rather than technically seating them.
Under sail
- Quick once moving
- Length on the waterline plus a tall rig means real passage speed when there is wind.
- Upwind
- Strong for a cruiser. It drives through a sea where a shorter boat would be stopping and starting.
- Loads are serious
- Sheets and halyards on a boat this size carry real force; electric winches, if fitted, change the week.
- Confirm which are powered.
- Under power
- Single engine and a long hull. A bow thruster, if fitted, is the difference between an easy berth and an interesting one.
Worth knowing before you book
- Confirm the bow thruster works
- On a 49-foot single-engine monohull in a crowded Mediterranean marina, it is the piece of equipment you will miss most if it fails.
- Check which winches are electric
- Hoisting a mainsail this size by hand on a hot afternoon is a job nobody volunteers for twice.
- Count the heads
- Five cabins with too few heads is the complaint that comes up most on boats of this size.
- Draft and your route
- A deep-keel 49-footer is shut out of shallow anchorages that a 40-footer takes without a thought.

Frequently asked questions
For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.
Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (Keramoti).
Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.
Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
