Why this country

Sailing in Belgium

Belgium has a short coast and a long network of inland water, and the charter fleet reflects both. Forty-seven of the fifty-nine boats are inland — motor cruisers and houseboats, most of them around Kinrooi on the Maas in Limburg, where a chain of flooded gravel pits and connecting channels makes a self-contained cruising ground on the Dutch border. The other twelve are sailing yachts at Nieuwpoort, the main yachting harbour on the sixty-odd kilometres of Belgian coastline.

These are not variations on a theme; they are different holidays with different rules. The Limburg water is flat, enclosed and unhurried, with no tide and almost no commercial traffic on the recreational stretches. You can also lock out onto the Maas proper and head for Maastricht in one direction or the Dutch network in the other.

Nieuwpoort is the opposite: the southern North Sea, properly tidal, with shifting sandbanks offshore and busy shipping lanes beyond them. It is good sailing with real navigation in it, and the short coast means most passages head for Dutch or French ports rather than staying home.

    The lake system on the Belgian–Dutch border that most of the inland fleet works. Sheltered, interconnected and easy to potter around without a plan.

    A small Maas town with an arcaded market square, reachable from the lakes. One of the pleasanter overnight stops in Limburg.

    Maastricht

    Just over the Dutch border and reachable up the Maas. Worth building a longer inland week around.

    The largest marina on the Belgian coast and the base for the sailing fleet. The Yser estuary behind it is a bird reserve.

Local rules and paperwork in Belgium

Inland licence
Often not required — but it depends on the boat. Belgian inland rules turn on length and speed, as in the Netherlands. Much of the charter fleet falls under the threshold; confirm the specific boat with the base rather than assuming.
Coastal licence
A certificate is expected for the sailing fleet. An ICC or recognised equivalent, plus VHF. The North Sea here is tidal and busy; operators are not relaxed about it.
Tides
Significant on the coast, absent inland. Nieuwpoort has real tidal range and the offshore banks move. If you are used to the Mediterranean, add a day to get comfortable.
Crossing borders
Routine in both directions. The Limburg lakes straddle the Dutch border and the coastal fleet reaches the Netherlands or France in a day. No formalities within Schengen.
Locks and bridges
They set the inland day. Opening hours apply, and the lock onto the Maas proper is the main constraint on how far you get.
