Why this country

Sailing in Hungary

If you are expecting Lake Balaton, this is not it. Hungary's charter fleet — 20 boats, every one a motor cruiser — sits on the Tisza: fourteen at Kisköre on Lake Tisza and six at Tokaj on the upper river. There is not a single boat on Balaton in our catalogue, and the Danube does not feature either. The Tisza is the quieter, flatter, far less visited half of Hungarian boating, and it is a genuinely different product.

Lake Tisza is a reservoir rather than a natural lake — the dam at Kisköre was built in 1973 and the lake took until the 1990s to fill. At 127 km² it is Hungary's largest reservoir and its second-largest lake, 27 kilometres long, and the number that matters most for a boat is this: its average depth is 1.3 metres. There are 17-metre holes in the old river channel, but the rest is shallow water threaded with marked routes through 43 km² of small islands and reed beds. You navigate by the channel markers, not by the shoreline, and that is the skill the week asks of you.

It also means wildlife rather than scenery in the alpine sense. A bird reserve covers the northern shore and 124 species nest around the lake. Upstream at Tokaj the character changes again: a working river in a wine region, with the town itself at the confluence of the Tisza and the Bodrog.

Prices here are the narrowest band in our catalogue — roughly €2,260 to €3,470 a week — which reflects a fleet of similar boats doing a similar job. Average build year is 2020 and the average boat has three cabins.

Sailing conditions in Hungary

Where this actually is
The Tisza — not Balaton, not the Danube

14 boats at Kisköre on Lake Tisza and 6 at Tokaj on the upper river. There are no boats on Lake Balaton in our catalogue.

The lake
127 km², average depth 1.3 m

27 km long, with 43 km² of small islands and a maximum depth of 17 m in the old river channel. Shallow water on marked routes, not open lake cruising.

What you are chartering
Motor cruisers

All 20 boats, averaging 12.4 m and 3 cabins, average build year 2020. No sail here.

Season
April – October

A summer inland season, as on the Dutch and German networks. Outside it the bases close and the lake draws down.

Changeover day
Mostly Saturday

16 boats hand over on Saturday and 4 on Friday — check the specific boat.

Worth the detour

Where to drop anchor in Hungary

  • 1

Lake Tisza — the island maze

The marked channels wind between reed beds and low wooded islands, with the open lake only in places. The appeal is that you are inside the landscape rather than looking across it.

  • 2

    Kisköre

The dam and the main base. The lock here is the boundary between the lake and the river below it, and the first lesson of the week.

  • 3

    Abádszalók

The lake's main resort bay on the western side, with the widest open water and the most facilities. Useful for provisioning mid-week.

  • 4

    Tiszafüred and Tiszafüred bird reserve

The northern shore is a protected area where 124 bird species nest. Access is restricted in parts — herons, egrets and black storks are the draw, and early morning is when to be there.

  • 5

    Lake Tisza Ecocentre, Poroszló

On the north-west shore: a large freshwater aquarium and marshland walkway that explains the system you are boating through. A worthwhile stop ashore.

  • 6

    Tokaj

The upstream base, at the meeting of the Tisza and the Bodrog, in one of the oldest classified wine regions in the world. The cellars are in the town and the vineyards on the hill above it.

  • 7

The Bodrog and the upper Tisza

Narrow, slow river with willow banks and almost no traffic. Different from the lake in every respect: no open water, no markers to follow, just the river.

  • 8

    Tiszadob and the oxbows

Between Tokaj and the lake the old river left a string of oxbow lakes. Several are navigable at the mouth and make quiet overnight stops.

Where a week in Hungary could take you

Lake Tisza from Kisköre

7 days

Short distances, shallow marked channels and a village or a reed bed every hour. The whole week fits inside 27 kilometres of lake, which is the point.

  1. 1

    Kisköre

Handover and the briefing; through the lock onto the lake and anchor close by.

  2. 2

    Abádszalók

Across the widest part of the lake to the main resort bay.

  3. 3

    Poroszló

North-west shore and the Ecocentre; a short day.

  4. 4

    Tiszafüred

The northern shore beside the bird reserve. Go out at dawn.

  5. 5

    The island channels

Work back south through the marked routes rather than across the open water.

  6. 6

    Sarud or Tiszanána

Smaller bays on the western side, quieter than Abádszalók.

  7. 7

    Kisköre

Back through the lock for handover.

The upper Tisza from Tokaj

7 days

A river week rather than a lake week: no open water, no channel markers to follow, and wine cellars instead of resort bays. Slower in every sense.

  1. 1

    Tokaj

Handover at the confluence; an evening in the cellars.

  2. 2

    Up the Bodrog

Narrow willow-lined river, almost no traffic.

  3. 3

Back to the Tisza — Tiszacsege direction

    Downstream with the current.

  4. 4

    Tiszadob and the oxbows

Old river loops, several navigable at the mouth.

  5. 5

    Tiszalök

The lock and barrage upstream; turning point for most crews.

  6. 6

    Back toward Tokaj

Upstream against the current — allow longer than the chart suggests.

  7. 7

    Tokaj

    Short run back for handover.

Local rules and paperwork in Hungary

Licence — what the base says
The Kisköre houseboats are let without a licence. The houseboat fleet at Kisköre is marketed and rented licence-free, with a passenger limit of between four and eight depending on the boat. A skipper can be hired for roughly €100 a day if you would rather not drive.
Licence — the general Hungarian rule
Motorboats over 4 kW normally need a certificate. On Hungarian inland waterways the pleasure-craft certificate is required for motorboats above 4 kW, up to 20 m and 12 passengers, with a minimum age of 18. We have not been able to confirm exactly how the licence-free houseboat arrangement sits alongside this rule, so confirm the position for your specific boat with the base before you book.
Depth is the real constraint
Average 1.3 m across the lake. Stay on the marked channels. The deep water is the old river bed; everything either side of it is shallow, and running aground on a reed bank is the commonest way a week here goes wrong.
The Kisköre lock
It separates the lake from the river. Going downstream of the dam is a different waterway with different conditions. Most charters stay on the lake; check whether yours is permitted through.
Protected areas
The northern shore reserve has restrictions. Parts of the bird reserve are closed to boats or limited in the nesting season. The base will mark what is open on your chart — the rules are there because 124 species nest around the lake.
Passenger limits
Lower than the cabin count suggests. Several of the licence-free boats are capped at four to eight people regardless of berths. If you are a large group, confirm the limit on the specific boat rather than counting cabins.

Checked October 2026. Rules change — confirm the detail that matters for your trip when you book.
