Why this country

Sailing in Mexico

Mexico has two coasts and our fleet is entirely on the wrong one for most people's expectations. There is not a single boat in Cancún or Cozumel. All 13 are on the Pacific side: ten at Marina CostaBaja in La Paz, on the Sea of Cortez, and three at Marina Vallarta on the mainland. The two bases are roughly 300 nautical miles apart across the mouth of the Gulf of California, so they are separate destinations rather than two ends of one route.

La Paz is the one that matters, and what it offers is not really a sailing ground — it is a wildlife calendar. Just north of the city, the Espíritu Santo archipelago is a chain of red volcanic islands dropping straight into clear water, and at its northern tip the rock of Los Islotes holds a sea lion colony where young animals come out to swim with people. That season runs from 1 September to 31 May. Whale sharks gather in the shallow bay off La Paz itself from October to April. The overall charter season is October to May; from June through November it is storm season in Baja, with rougher water and the crossings to the islands uncomfortable.

So the single most consequential decision here is your dates, not your route. The islands are a few hours from the marina and the distances barely matter; whether the sea lions and the whale sharks are there does.

Every boat in the fleet is a catamaran, averaging 12.9 metres and 3.8 cabins with an average build year of 2023, and six of the thirteen are skippered only. Prices sit in a narrow band of roughly €4,900 to €7,600 a week.

On the water

Sailing conditions in Mexico

Which coast
Pacific, not Caribbean

No boats at Cancún or Cozumel. 10 at La Paz on the Sea of Cortez and 3 at Puerto Vallarta, about 300 nm apart.

Season
October – May

Cooler air, clear water and active marine life. June to November is storm season in Baja with rougher surface conditions, including on the short runs out to the islands.

Sea lions at Los Islotes
1 September – 31 May

The colony is there year-round but the in-water season is defined, and the young animals that make it remarkable are most active through the autumn and winter.

Whale sharks
October – April

They feed in the shallow bay off La Paz itself, so this is a short trip from the marina rather than an expedition.

Typical boat
Catamaran — all 13

Averaging 12.9 m and 3.8 cabins, average build year 2023. Six of the thirteen are skippered only.

Worth the detour

Where to drop anchor in Mexico

  • 1

    Los Islotes

Two rocks off the northern tip of Espíritu Santo with a resident sea lion colony. One of very few places in the world where young sea lions reliably interact with swimmers. In-water season 1 September to 31 May.

  • 2

    Espíritu Santo — Ensenada Grande

A triple-lobed bay on the island's west side, red cliffs down to pale sand. Generally reckoned the best anchorage in the archipelago and an easy afternoon from La Paz.

  • 3

    Bahía San Gabriel

At the southern end of Espíritu Santo: a wide shallow bay with a mangrove lagoon behind it and an old pearl-farm wall still visible.

  • 4

    Isla Partida

Joined to Espíritu Santo by a sandbar, with its own string of coves. Caleta Partida sits in the gap between the two islands — a drowned volcanic crater.

  • 5

    Whale shark bay, La Paz

The shallows at the entrance to the city's bay. Access is licensed and guided, numbers are capped, and it is minutes rather than hours from the marina.

  • 6

    Balandra

A near-enclosed turquoise lagoon just outside La Paz, famous ashore and shallow enough that most of it is knee-deep. Anchor outside and go in by dinghy.

  • 7

    Isla San Francisco

North of the archipelago, with a crescent bay on its south side. The far point for a week that wants one longer leg in it.

  • 8

    Banderas Bay, Puerto Vallarta

The other base: a large bay on the mainland with humpback whales from December to March, Las Marietas islands to the north-west and the Yelapa villages on the south shore.

Suggested routes

Where a week in Mexico could take you

Espíritu Santo from La Paz

7 days

Short distances — the archipelago starts a couple of hours from the marina. Plan the week around the wildlife bookings and the afternoon wind rather than mileage.

  1. 1

    La Paz — Marina CostaBaja

Saturday handover; out to Balandra or Bahía Falsa for the first night.

  2. 2

    Bahía San Gabriel

Round to Espíritu Santo's southern end.

  3. 3

    Ensenada Grande

Up the island's west side to the best of the coves.

  4. 4

    Los Islotes

The sea lion colony at the northern tip — go early, before the day boats.

  5. 5

    Isla San Francisco

The one longer leg, north out of the archipelago.

  6. 6

    Caleta Partida

Back south into the crater between the two islands.

  7. 7

    La Paz

Return for handover, with the whale shark bay on the way in from October to April.

Banderas Bay from Puerto Vallarta

7 days

A single large bay rather than an archipelago, and a different season: humpbacks from December to March. Three boats only, so availability is tight.

  1. 1

    Marina Vallarta

Handover; move across the bay rather than staying in the marina.

  2. 2

    Yelapa

A village on the southern shore with no road to it.

  3. 3

    Quimixto or Las Ánimas

Along the south shore; small beaches with no access except by water.

  4. 4

    Islas Marietas

A national park at the bay's north-west corner; access is capped and permitted.

  5. 5

Punta de Mita / La Cruz

The northern shore, with the best of the bay's breeze.

  6. 6

    Across the bay

Humpback whales in the middle of it from December to March.

  7. 7

    Marina Vallarta

    Short leg back for handover.

Local rules and paperwork in Mexico

Dates matter more than the route
October to May, and check the wildlife windows. Sea lions in the water from 1 September to 31 May; whale sharks October to April; humpbacks at Vallarta December to March. The islands are close enough that the itinerary writes itself — the calendar does not.
Storm season
June – November. Rougher conditions across Baja, including on the short crossings out to Espíritu Santo. Most of the fleet is priced and positioned for the winter season.
Protected areas
Espíritu Santo and the Marietas are national parks. Park fees, designated anchorages and buoys apply. Los Islotes and the whale shark bay are both access-limited and guided — book through the base in advance rather than arriving and hoping.
Skippered option
Nearly half the fleet. Six of thirteen boats are skippered only. Given that the wildlife encounters are licensed and guided anyway, a skipper removes most of the week's administration.
The afternoon wind
It builds, and it is local. La Paz bay and the channel to the islands pick up a reliable afternoon breeze. Crossings are more comfortable in the morning, which also suits the early starts the wildlife asks for.
Two bases, one country
La Paz and Vallarta are about 300 nm apart. Across the mouth of the Gulf of California. They are separate holidays with different seasons and different wildlife; confirm which one your boat is at.

Checked October 2026. Rules change — confirm the detail that matters for your trip when you book.
