Why this country

Sailing in Netherlands

Chartering in the Netherlands is a different activity from chartering in the Mediterranean, and it is worth being clear about that before you book. Most of the fleet here is motor cruisers and houseboats, not sailing yachts, and most of it is on inland water — canals, rivers and the big sheltered lakes rather than open sea. You travel at walking pace through a landscape, tie up in a town for the evening, and move on in the morning.

That makes it one of the easiest places to take a boat with no experience. Under Dutch rules a boat under 15 metres that cannot exceed 20 km/h needs no licence at all, which covers a large share of what is on offer. The exception is the big water: the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea need a Klein Vaarbewijs II, and that is a real certificate, not a formality.

The season runs roughly April to October. Friesland's lakes and the canal network behind them are the heart of it — short distances, hundreds of mooring options, and bridges and locks that set the rhythm of the day more than any weather forecast does.

What you are chartering
Motor cruisers

196 of 270 boats are motor yachts and 34 are houseboats; only 40 are sailing yachts. This is cruising, not sailing.

Where
Inland water

225 boats are on the inland network — canals, rivers and lakes. A further 45 sit on the North Sea coast.

Season
April – October

Bridges and locks keep seasonal hours; outside the season many operate on request or not at all.

What sets the pace
Bridges and locks

Not wind. Plan a day by how many openings are on the route, not by distance.

Worth the detour

Where to drop anchor in Netherlands

  • 1

    The Frisian lakes

A connected system of shallow lakes and canals in the north, with Sneek, Heeg and Grou as the usual bases. Short legs, constant choice of route, and villages close enough to reach before dinner.

  • 2

    Sneek

The practical centre of Frisian boating and where a lot of the fleet is based. Worth a night even if you leave straight after handover.

  • 3

    Giethoorn

A village with canals instead of streets in the Weerribben-Wieden wetlands. Busy by day and much better in the early morning or evening.

  • 4

    IJsselmeer — Enkhuizen and Hoorn

Former Zuiderzee ports on a lake the size of a small sea. Open water with real waves; this is the part that needs the bigger licence.

  • 5

    Amsterdam canals

Reachable by boat and unforgettable, but mooring is tightly regulated and often pre-booked. Treat it as a destination to arrange, not to improvise.

  • 6

    Utrecht and the Vecht

The river north of Utrecht is lined with 17th-century country houses. Narrow, slow and one of the prettiest stretches in the country.

  • 7

    Zeeland — Veerse Meer

In the south-west delta: sheltered salt water with small islands to anchor beside. A middle ground between canal cruising and open sea.

  • 8

    The Wadden Sea

A UNESCO tidal area north of the mainland where boats dry out on the sand at low tide. Demanding, properly tidal, and only for experienced crews.

Where a week in Netherlands could take you

A week in Friesland

7 days

Short legs, no open water, and no licence needed on most of the fleet. The easiest first charter in this guide.

  1. 1

    Sneek

Handover and briefing; move a short way out onto the lakes.

  2. 2

    Heeg or Woudsend

An hour or two at most — the point is to stop often.

  3. 3

    Sloten

One of the eleven Frisian towns, small enough to walk in an hour.

  4. 4

    Lemmer

On the edge of the IJsselmeer; the lock here is the boundary with the big water.

  5. 5

    Grou

Back into the lakes through the canal system.

  6. 6

Earnewâld / Nationaal Park De Alde Feanen

Reed marsh and open water; quiet moorings.

  7. 7

    Sneek

Short run back for the morning handover.

Local rules and paperwork in Netherlands

Licence — the usual case
None needed under 15 m and under 20 km/h. Dutch rules exempt boats below both thresholds, which covers much of the charter fleet. Confirm the specific boat: the limit is on the boat, not the route.
Licence — the big water
Klein Vaarbewijs II for the IJsselmeer and Wadden Sea. A real certificate, internationally equivalent to an ICC for inland and coastal waters. KVB I covers rivers, canals and smaller lakes only.
Bridges and locks
They have opening hours, and they set your day. Many close for lunch and in the evening; some charge a small fee collected in a clog on a fishing rod. Plan the route around them.
Mooring
Town quays are usually paid, lake moorings often free. Popular towns fill by late afternoon in July and August — arrive early rather than pushing on.
Skippered option
Rarely necessary. Most crews here charter bareboat, including people who have never driven a boat. The briefing at handover is the training.
