Why this country

Sailing in Sweden

Sweden is a sailing destination in a way that its Nordic neighbours in this catalogue are not: 37 of the 47 boats are sailing yachts. Most of them are in the Stockholm archipelago, a scatter of something like 24,000 islands and skerries east of the city, where you can sail for a week and never cross more than a few miles of open water. A smaller group works the Göta Canal from Motala, and a handful sail the west coast out of Gothenburg.

The archipelago is the draw and it rewards a particular kind of week. The inner islands are wooded and close together, with sheltered channels between them; the outer skerries are bare granite and open to the Baltic. Most crews work outward through the season of their nerve. Anchoring stern-to a rock with a line ashore is the local technique, and the base will show you how.

On paperwork, Sweden is an unusual case. There is no national legal requirement to hold a licence to skipper a private boat in Swedish waters — but that does not help you, because charter operators impose their own. Expect to show an ICC, an RYA Day Skipper, a Swedish Förarintyg or equivalent, plus a sailing CV with recent time on a similar boat.

What you are sailing
Sailing yachts

37 of 47 boats, averaging around 12.3 m. The only Nordic fleet in our catalogue that is genuinely sail-led.

Where
Stockholm archipelago

29 boats at Saltsjö Pir. A further 9 work the Göta Canal from Motala and 8 sail the west coast from Gothenburg — three different weeks.

Season
May – September

Midsummer gives light almost around the clock; July is the Swedish holiday month and the harbours show it.

Local technique
Stern-to the rock

Anchor off the stern and take a line ashore to the granite. Not difficult, but not how you moor in the Mediterranean.

Worth the detour

Where to drop anchor in Sweden

  • 1

    Sandhamn

The sailing capital of the archipelago on Sandön, out towards the open Baltic. Busy in July and the natural turning point of a week.

  • 2

    Grinda

A nature-reserve island in the middle archipelago with a guest harbour and a hostel in the old villa. Close enough to Stockholm for a first night.

  • 3

    Utö

In the southern archipelago, with old iron mines and long beaches. Quieter than the Sandhamn route and easy to reach in a day.

  • 4

    Finnhamn

Three linked islands with sheltered natural harbours on every side — useful whichever way the wind sits.

  • 5

    Möja

A working island with a year-round community, shop and bakery. One of the few places in the outer archipelago that is not seasonal.

  • 6

    Vaxholm

The gateway town on the way out of Stockholm, with a fortress guarding the channel. Most crews pass it on day one.

  • 7

    Göta Canal — Berg locks

A staircase of seven locks near Linköping on the canal route west from Motala. A different charter entirely, and worth knowing about before you book.

  • 8

    Bohuslän coast, north of Gothenburg

Bare pink granite islands and fishing villages like Smögen and Fjällbacka. The west-coast fleet sails here rather than in the Baltic.

Where a week in Sweden could take you

The Stockholm archipelago

7 days

Out through the inner islands and back, going as far offshore as the weather and the crew want. Legs are short and shelter is never far.

  1. 1

    Saltsjöbaden

Handover; a short sail out to the first islands.

  2. 2

    Vaxholm or Grinda

    Through the inner archipelago channels.

  3. 3

    Finnhamn

Middle archipelago; natural harbours on several sides.

  4. 4

    Sandhamn

Out to the edge of the open Baltic.

  5. 5

    Möja

Back inside; a working island with a shop.

Swing south through the quieter group.

  7. 7

    Saltsjöbaden

Return to base through the inner channels.

Local rules and paperwork in Sweden

Licence — the real answer
Not required by law, but required by operators. Sweden has no national licence requirement for private boats. Charter companies impose their own, so in practice you still need one. The distinction matters only if someone tells you "no licence needed in Sweden" — that is true and useless.
What is accepted
ICC, RYA Day Skipper, Förarintyg or equivalent. Plus a sailing CV showing recent experience on a comparable boat.
Mooring technique
Stern anchor and a line to the rock. The archipelago standard. Guest harbours also exist but the natural harbours are the point of sailing here.
Right of public access
Allemansrätten lets you land almost anywhere. Subject to staying clear of houses and respecting nature reserves. It is why anchoring off an empty island is normal here.
Season length
Short — May to September. Water stays cold well into summer and the fleet lays up early. July books out first.

Checked October 2026. Rules change — confirm the detail that matters for your trip when you book.

Months further out look emptier simply because they are further away — most charters are booked a few months ahead, not a year.
