About the Dufour 460 Grand Large
Grand Large is Dufour's cruising line, and the 460 is the size where it has been most successful in charter fleets. Umberto Felci drew the hull; the house signature — a barbecue, sink and preparation surface built into the top of the transom — is here, and so is the beam carried forward that gives the interior its volume.
The 460 sits at a useful point: large enough to sleep a big group in four cabins without anyone feeling short-changed, small enough that the loads and the berthing stay within reach of a confident amateur crew.
It has been in fleets long enough that condition varies, which is the main thing to ask about. The design itself has aged well; Felci hulls do.
Who it suits
- Larger groups who still want a sailing boat
- Four cabins in charter trim, on a hull that goes properly rather than simply carrying people.
- Crews who eat aboard every night
- The transom kitchen turns the cockpit into the centre of the evening instead of a place to wait for food.
- Confident amateur skippers
- Big enough to feel substantial, small enough that nothing requires professional handling.
- Less suited to crews who want a current boat
- This model has been in service a while. Equipment and canvas vary far more between boats than the hull does.
Layout & life aboard
- Transom kitchen
- Barbecue, sink and prep surface built into the transom, with the cook facing the cockpit.
- Four cabins that work
- Beam carried forward means the forward cabin is a real cabin, not a tapering space you crawl into.
- Confirm the heads count — that is what a full crew notices.
- Bright, well-finished saloon
- Dufour interiors have a reputation for feeling a step above the price, and this generation holds it up.
- Long cockpit with twin wheels
- Enough seating for the whole crew, with the helms aft and clear of the table.
Under sail
- Felci hull
- A sportier shape than the volume builders of the same length. It tracks, it points, and it rewards trim.
- Upwind
- Good. The boat makes real progress to windward rather than slipping sideways and burning fuel.
- Comfortable in a sea
- Enough waterline and enough weight to keep moving through a chop rather than stopping dead in it.
- Under power
- Single engine with a saildrive; prop walk is pronounced enough to be useful once you know which way it goes.
Worth knowing before you book
- Ask when the sails were replaced
- On a model that has done many charter seasons, the sails tell you more about the boat than the year of build does.
- Test the transom barbecue
- The feature the boat is chosen for, and the one most likely to be missing gas or a grill.
- Keel draft
- Decides which anchorages are available. Ask before building a route around shallow bays.
- Canvas condition
- Bimini and sprayhood wear out before anything else and you use them every single day.

Frequently asked questions
For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.
Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (Marina Medulin).
Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.
Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
