About the Dufour 470

The 470 is Dufour's answer to the question of what a mid-size cruiser should feel like, and the answer is: more like a sailing boat than most of its competitors. Umberto Felci drew it, and the hull has a sportier intent than the volume-first designs it sits alongside in charter fleets.

What you notice first is the transom. Dufour builds a barbecue, a sink and a preparation surface into the top of it, so the person cooking stands facing the cockpit rather than disappearing below. On a week where most dinners happen at anchor, that changes the shape of every evening.

Below, the beam carried well forward opens up the saloon and makes the forward cabin genuinely usable rather than a tapering compromise. It is a boat designed by people who had thought about what a crew actually does all day.

Who it suits

Crews who want to sail and to eat well
A responsive Felci hull and a cockpit built around cooking and eating outdoors.
A family, or three couples
Charter layouts typically run to three or four cabins with proper separation fore and aft.
Skippers who enjoy trimming
This hull rewards attention. Set it up properly and it is noticeably quicker than the class average.
Less suited to crews who never leave the marina
You are paying for sailing ability. If the plan is mostly to stay alongside, a beamier volume cruiser gives more space for the money.

Layout & life aboard

Transom kitchen
Barbecue, sink and preparation area built into the transom, facing the cockpit.
Check it works and that there is gas at handover — it is the feature you will use daily.
Beam carried forward
A wide saloon and a forward cabin that is a proper cabin rather than a wedge.
Twin wheels and a long cockpit
Seating for the whole crew with the helms far enough aft to keep the working area clear.
Finish above the class average
Dufour interiors have a reputation for feeling better put together than the volume builders at the same price.

Under sail

Felci hull with intent
Sportier than most cruisers of this size. It holds a lane and accelerates when the breeze fills in.
Upwind
Strong for a cruising boat, especially on the deeper keel. It will sail to windward rather than motor there.
Helm feel
More feedback through the wheel than you expect from a charter boat, which is most of the reason to pick one.
Under power
Single engine with a saildrive. A bow thruster, if fitted, makes a long hull in a short berth much simpler.

Worth knowing before you book

Test the transom barbecue and gas
The most-used feature on the boat and the one most often found empty or missing a part.
Confirm the keel draft
A deeper keel sails better and shuts you out of shallow anchorages. Know which you have before planning the route.
Check the bow thruster
On a hull this length with one engine, it is the system that makes a tight Mediterranean berth routine.
Reef before the afternoon breeze
A boat that sails well accelerates quickly. Putting a reef in early is easier than shaking one out late.

Frequently asked questions

For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.

Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (Marina d'Arechi).

Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.

Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
