About the Excess 11
Excess is Groupe Beneteau's answer to a complaint: that cruising catamarans had become comfortable to the point of being dull to steer. Lagoon belongs to the same group, but Excess was set up as a separate brand with a different brief — VPLP hulls, lighter construction, its own tooling rather than Lagoon parts, and a sailing feel you can actually notice.
The 11 launched in 2020 and is the small end of the range, which makes it something genuinely scarce: a cruising catamaran under forty feet that was designed to sail rather than simply to sleep eight people.
The clearest expression of the philosophy is where you stand. The helms are outboard, right at the back of each hull, close to the water. You can see the sails from there and feel what the boat is doing, which is the opposite of being perched on a flybridge watching the horizon.
Who it suits
- Sailors who found other charter cats boring
- The direct helm position and lighter build mean you feel the boat respond. On most cruising catamarans you do not.
- Couples and small families
- A compact catamaran that two people can sail properly, with the stability and flat decks that make a multihull worth choosing.
- Light-air destinations
- The sports rig gets this boat moving in breezes where heavier catamarans of the same size would be motoring.
- Less suited to crews who want maximum volume
- It is a sub-forty-foot cat built with weight in mind. If space per euro is the priority, a Bali or a Lagoon gives more of it.
Layout & life aboard
- Outboard helms
- A wheel at the back of each hull, low and close to the water, with the sails in view.
- The optional movable bimini matters here — it decides whether you can see the sail plan while shaded.
- Flat, open deck
- Maximising usable topside space was the design brief for the whole range, and it shows in how you move around.
- Saloon and cockpit on one level
- The usual catamaran advantage, in a boat small enough that the space stays intimate rather than cavernous.
- Lighter build
- Original tooling rather than borrowed Lagoon parts, with weight treated as something to manage rather than ignore.
Under sail
- This is the point of the boat
- VPLP hulls, a sporty rig and modest displacement give a catamaran that responds to trim instead of ignoring it.
- Light airs
- Where the difference from a heavier cat is most obvious — the boat keeps moving when others reach for the key.
- Upwind
- Better than the class average, though still a cruising catamaran with the limits that implies.
- Under power
- Twin engines, light hull, very manoeuvrable. The helms being aft means you are standing near the stern you are watching.
Worth knowing before you book
- The opposite bow is your blind spot
- Standing at an outboard helm, the far bow is the part of the boat you cannot see. That is the corner that hits things.
- Put someone forward when you are coming alongside, every time.
- Check what bimini is fitted
- A fixed cover that blocks your view of the sails removes the main reason to choose this boat.
- Weather at the helm
- Outboard and low means close to the spray. Excellent in the Mediterranean in June, less so in a squall.
- Volume expectations
- If the crew is picturing a Lagoon, say so in advance. This is a different trade and people notice at handover.

Frequently asked questions
For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.
Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (Port of Propriano).
Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.
Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
