About the Lagoon 42

The Lagoon 42 arrived in 2016 and went on to become one of the most chartered catamarans afloat. The hulls are VPLP's work — the same office behind a long line of ocean racing multihulls — with the exterior shaped by Patrick le Quément, and the boat marked a clear break from the Lagoons that came before it.

The break is in the rig. The mast sits far aft, roughly in the middle of the boat rather than well forward, which shrinks the mainsail and opens up the foretriangle. The headsail that goes in front of it is self-tacking, running on a track ahead of the mast. The theory is better balance and less pitching; the practical result is the part that matters to you. Tacking means turning the wheel. Nobody grinds a winch, nobody moves a sheet across the boat, and a crew who has never set foot on a catamaran can get through a week without anything frightening happening.

What that buys is ease rather than pace. The 42 carries its accommodation in the hulls and puts the saloon, galley and cockpit on one continuous level, which is the layout most people have in mind when they picture a catamaran holiday — everyone in the same space, nobody climbing down a companionway to talk to anyone.

Who it suits

Two families, or two or three couples
The charter layout gives four double cabins, each with its own heads, so nobody shares a bathroom and nobody draws the short straw.
Three-cabin owner versions exist but rarely reach charter fleets.
Crews new to catamarans
A self-tacking headsail and two engines set wide apart make this one of the gentlest introductions to multihull sailing.
If your licence is recent, this is a more forgiving first week than a monohull of similar length.
Less suited to crews chasing miles
This is a volume cruiser. Close to the wind, and especially in light air, it is slow, and you will use the engines more than you expect.
Boats fitted with the square-top mainsail are noticeably better upwind than those without.
Less suited to tight, busy harbours
Beam is the constraint. In high season the small number of catamaran berths in popular ports goes early and costs more than a monohull berth.
Worth planning stops ahead rather than arriving and hoping, particularly in August.

Layout & life aboard

One level, front to back
Galley, saloon table and cockpit sit in a single continuous space at the same height, divided only by a sliding door.
It keeps the group together. It also means cooking, conversation and music travel — there is no quiet corner on this deck.
Raised helm on the starboard side
A single helm station on the coachroof, reached by a few steps from the cockpit, with its own small bench.
It is open to port, which makes it easy to step in and out of but leaves you exposed in weather.
The foredeck is the best room
Trampolines between the bows, and on many boats a seating area forward of the saloon, give you somewhere to be that is not the cockpit.
The forward cockpit is not on every hull — worth asking before you book if shade and separate space matter to you.
Stowage is the weak point
Reviewers and owners consistently note there is less locker space than the boat's volume suggests.
Soft bags rather than hard cases, and this stops being a problem.

Under sail

The rig in one line
Tall mast set well aft, short boom, self-tacking headsail on a forward track. Square-top mainsail on better-equipped boats.
The mast position is the single thing that separates this generation of Lagoons from the ones before it.
Upwind
Modest, and worst in light air. In a seaway with the wind on the nose, most crews bear away and motor-sail rather than fight it.
Reaching and running
This is where the boat makes sense — flat, quiet and comfortable, with the open foretriangle leaving room for a downwind sail if one is aboard.
Under power
Two engines far apart will turn the boat within its own length. Manoeuvring is the easiest part of handling a catamaran.
Use the engines against each other rather than the wheel, and berthing stops being stressful.
In a cross sea
The structure works and the boat creaks. It is characteristic of the type rather than a fault.

Worth knowing before you book

Sight lines from the helm are limited
The helm seat is low and you sit on the starboard side. Seeing all four corners of the boat at once is not possible from there.
Agree hand signals with your crew before you back into a berth — this is the single most useful five minutes of your week.
There is little to hold on to going forward
The coachroof is short of handrails and grab points, which is noticeable when you go forward in any sea.
Worth a word with everyone aboard on day one, particularly if children are sailing.
A loaded boat is a slower boat
Four full cabins, full tanks and a week of provisions change how the boat sits and sails more than most crews expect.
Fill water as you go rather than topping every tank before departure.
Check the headsail furler at handover
The self-tacking headsail is the sail you will use all week, so it is the one worth testing before you leave the dock.
Run it out and back in fully with the base crew watching.

Frequently asked questions

For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.

Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (Hyeres).

Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.

Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
