About the Beneteau Oceanis 40.1

The 40.1 is the smallest boat in the Oceanis range to get the full treatment of the current generation: a Finot-Conq hull that flares to a chine above the waterline, Nauta styling, and a sail plan meant to be used rather than admired.

What the chine does on a 40-footer is more noticeable than on the big boats. A boat this length used to mean narrow aft cabins and a wedge-shaped double you crawled into. Pushing the volume outboard where the berths sit changes that, and it also makes the hull stiffer, so the boat stands up to its sails instead of lying over.

It is the size most charter crews actually want and rarely admit: big enough for a family or two couples, small enough that one person can handle it and that you will find a berth on a Friday evening in August.

Who it suits

A family, or two couples
Three cabins in most charter trim, with aft cabins that are genuinely usable thanks to the hull shape.
Crews who want to sail short-handed
At this size two competent people can run the boat all week without it ever feeling like work.
Busy harbours in high season
A 40-foot monohull is the easiest thing to berth and the cheapest to berth. In August that is worth more than it sounds.
Less suited to big groups
Cabin count is honest here. Push eight adults onto this boat for a week and the cockpit, not the cabins, is what you will feel.

Layout & life aboard

Wider where it counts
The chined hull gives proper double berths aft rather than the tapered spaces this length used to mean.
Twin wheels, open transom
Two helms with a drop-down bathing platform between them — unusual generosity for a 40-footer and genuinely useful at anchor.
Galley and saloon on one level
A straight galley with usable worktop and a dining area the whole crew fits around.
Stowage is finite
The volume went into the berths, which is the right call, but it means lockers are sized for soft bags and sensible packing.

Under sail

Stiffness is the character
Form stability from the chine means the boat carries sail longer before it needs a reef, and feels planted rather than tender.
Upwind
Good for a cruising 40-footer, particularly if the boat has the deeper keel.
Keel options exist here too
Shallow and deep versions are both built, and charter fleets lean towards the shallower one.
It decides which bays you can anchor in; worth asking before you plan a route.
Under power
Single engine, saildrive, modest windage. One of the more forgiving boats of this size to berth.

Worth knowing before you book

Confirm the keel draft
Two very different boats share this name depending on which keel was ordered.
Find the prop walk early
Single screw means the stern swings one way in reverse. Learn which in open water on day one.
Shade is not standard
A sprayhood is not a bimini. In a Mediterranean July the difference decides whether anyone sits in the cockpit at midday.
Check what is actually fitted rather than what is pictured.
Pack soft
Hard suitcases have nowhere to live on a boat this size once the cabins are occupied.

Frequently asked questions

For bareboat charter the skipper on board needs a recognised sailing license and, in most countries, a VHF certificate. If nobody in your group is licensed, book the yacht with a professional skipper.

Charter weeks normally run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in in the afternoon and check-out in the morning at the home base (ACI Marina Pomer).

Cross-border sailing is often possible with prior notice and additional paperwork. Ask us before booking so the operator can prepare the documents.

Fuel is normally paid on a tank-to-tank basis: you receive the yacht with a full tank and return it full.
