Why this country

Sailing in Egypt

Our Egyptian listings are not sailing yachts and not really charter boats in the Mediterranean sense. There are four of them, all crewed motor vessels, averaging 33.8 metres with eight cabins each — the highest cabin count in our catalogue. That combination only describes one thing: Red Sea liveaboard dive boats. The cabins matter more than the length because the boat exists to sleep sixteen to twenty divers and put them on a reef at dawn.

Two of the four are at Sharm el-Sheikh, one at Abu Tig Marina in El Gouna and one at Marina Hurghada. Those, along with Safaga and Marsa Alam further south, are the ports the Red Sea safari fleet works from, and the route you book determines which one you fly to.

The destinations are the reason. North from Sharm you have Ras Mohammed and the wrecks — the Thistlegorm, the Rosalie Moller, the Dunraven and the four ships piled on Abu Nuhas reef. Offshore and further south are the pelagic sites: the Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone, where hammerheads, oceanic whitetips and occasionally thresher sharks are the point. Further south again, from Port Ghalib, the Deep South routes reach Fury Shoals, St John's, Rocky and Zabargad.

April and May are generally reckoned the best months, with water between 21 and 30 °C across the year. Winter wind limits access to the exposed offshore sites, though operators differ on whether that is a formal seasonal restriction or simply weather — if the Brothers are the reason you are going, confirm the schedule with the specific boat rather than assuming it runs.

Sailing conditions in Egypt

What you are booking
A crewed liveaboard dive vessel

All four boats are skippered only, averaging 33.8 m and 8 cabins. This is a dive safari, chartered by the week, not a sailing holiday.

Best months
April – May

Generally considered the strongest window. Water temperatures run 21–30 °C across the year, so the season is long but not uniform.

Offshore access
Limited by winter wind

The Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone are exposed. Some operators run them year-round and others treat winter as off-season — confirm with the boat.

Departure ports
Sharm el-Sheikh, El Gouna, Hurghada

2 boats at Sharm, 1 at Abu Tig Marina in El Gouna and 1 at Marina Hurghada. Safaga and Marsa Alam serve the southern routes. The route decides the airport.

Who it suits
Certified divers, usually as a group

Weekly rates of roughly €22,000 to €61,000 are for the whole vessel. The economics assume a full boat, which is how these are normally booked.

Worth the detour

Where to drop anchor in Egypt

  • 1

    The Thistlegorm

A British supply ship sunk in 1941 in the Strait of Gubal, still holding motorcycles, trucks and rolling stock in her holds. The most dived wreck in the Red Sea and the anchor of every northern route.

  • 2

    Ras Mohammed

The national park at the tip of the Sinai peninsula, where the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba meet. Shark and Yolanda Reefs are the set-piece drift dives.

  • 3

    Abu Nuhas

A single reef with four shipwrecks on it, lying in a line at diveable depths. The reason northern itineraries run as wreck weeks rather than reef weeks.

  • 4

    The Brothers Islands

Two small islands far offshore with sheer walls, two wrecks and reliable shark action. Exposed enough that reaching them depends on the forecast.

  • 5

    Daedalus Reef

An isolated reef with a lighthouse on it, well out in the middle of the Red Sea. Hammerhead schools in season, and a long crossing to get there.

  • 6

    Elphinstone

A single reef off Marsa Alam, known for oceanic whitetips in the autumn. Usually combined with the Brothers and Daedalus on one route.

  • 7

    Fury Shoals and St John's

The Deep South: a maze of shallow reefs, caves and swim-throughs with far fewer boats than the north. Run from Port Ghalib or Marsa Alam.

  • 8

    Rocky Island and Zabargad

The far southern pair, close to the Sudanese border. The most remote sites on an Egyptian itinerary and only on the longer routes.

Local rules and paperwork in Egypt

No bareboat option
All four boats are crewed. No licence or sailing resume is needed from you. The vessel comes with captain, crew and usually dive guides.
Certification
Required, and the level depends on the route. Northern wreck and reef routes suit open-water divers with some experience. The Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone normally require advanced certification, a minimum logged-dive count and recent experience — the walls are deep and the currents are real.
Marine park fees
Charged separately. Ras Mohammed and the offshore islands are protected areas with per-day park fees, usually collected on board and not included in the charter price.
Flying after diving
Plan a surface interval. Itineraries end without a final-morning dive for this reason. Book flights with that in mind rather than the other way round.
Season and the offshore sites
Confirm the schedule, do not assume it. Winter wind limits access to the exposed offshore reefs. Operators differ on whether they treat this as a closed season or a weather call, so check with the specific boat if the Brothers or Daedalus are the reason you are booking.
Whole-boat pricing
The rates here are for the vessel. Weekly figures of €22,000–61,000 assume you are taking all eight cabins. Groups and dive clubs are the normal buyers; individual berths are sold by operators rather than per boat.
