Why this country

Sailing in Seychelles

The Seychelles charter fleet is unusually uniform: of 103 boats, 100 are catamarans, and every one of them leaves from the same place — Eden Island marina on Mahé. That is not a limitation so much as a description of the cruising ground. The Inner Islands sit on a shallow granite bank, the water between them is rarely deep, and the distances are short. A catamaran draws little, carries two families comfortably and can tuck into anchorages a keelboat would have to stand off from.

The year divides into two monsoons and the sailing changes completely between them. From May to September the south-east trades blow steadily at 15 to 25 knots, which is proper sailing and the reason most charters are booked then. The north-west monsoon from November to March is lighter and wetter. In between, April and October fall into the gap: winds drop to 5 to 10 knots and the sea flattens, which many people who have sailed here repeatedly consider the best weeks of the year.

One piece of admin is worth planning around. The Seychelles port authority wants skipper qualifications submitted at least seven days before departure, and they must be in English or French — no other language is accepted. That is a deadline, not a formality, and it has caught people out.

Worth the detour

Where to drop anchor in Seychelles

  • 1

    Anse Lazio, Praslin

Granite boulders at either end of a curve of sand on Praslin's north-west corner. Exposed to the north-west monsoon, so it is a south-east season anchorage.

  • 2

    Vallée de Mai, Praslin

A UNESCO palm forest inland from the coast, home to the coco de mer. The one stop on a Seychelles week that is not about the water.

  • 3

    La Digue

No cars to speak of — bicycles and ox carts. Anse Source d'Argent is the much-photographed granite beach; the anchorage is off La Passe.

  • 4

    Curieuse

A marine national park island with free-roaming giant tortoises and a mangrove boardwalk. Park fees apply and are usually collected on arrival.

  • 5

    St Pierre and Cousin

Tiny granite outcrops off Praslin that snorkel far better than their size suggests. Day stops rather than overnights.

  • 6

Baie Ste Anne marine park, Mahé

A cluster of islands just off Victoria, usually the first night out of Eden Island. Convenient rather than remote, and a good shakedown.

  • 7

    Grande Soeur and Félicité

East of Praslin. Grande Soeur is privately owned with day access; the anchorages here are the quietest of the Inner Islands.

  • 8

    Aride

A seabird reserve north of Praslin with landing restricted and weather-dependent. Worth the attempt in the calm shoulder months.

Suggested routes

Where a week in Seychelles could take you

The Inner Islands loop

7 days

Short legs on a shallow bank, out and back from the single base. Distances are small enough that weather decides the order, not the clock.

  1. 1

    Eden Island, Mahé

Handover and provisioning; move across to the Ste Anne islands for the first night.

  2. 2

    Baie Ste Anne marine park

A short shakedown before the crossing to Praslin.

  3. 3

Praslin — Anse Lazio or Baie Ste Anne

The main crossing of the week.

  4. 4

    Curieuse

National park; tortoises ashore, fees on arrival.

  5. 5

    La Digue

Anchor off La Passe; bicycles ashore.

  6. 6

    Grande Soeur or Félicité

The quietest anchorages of the group before turning back.

  7. 7

    Mahé

Return crossing to Eden Island for the morning handover.

Before you book

Local rules and paperwork in Seychelles

Qualifications deadline
Submitted at least 7 days before departure. The port authority requires this, and documents must be in English or French — no other language is accepted. Leave time for it rather than arriving with paperwork.
Skipper certificate
An ICC or recognised national licence. Other accepted qualifications include ASA and US Sailing certificates. The authority wants a certificate, not just experience.
Experience expected
Around 20 days or 400 miles as skipper. On a yacht of comparable size. Operators ask for this alongside the certificate.
VHF certificate
Often required, depending on the radio fitted. Confirm with the base when you send the rest of the paperwork.
Marine park fees
Charged per person at several islands. Curieuse, Ste Anne and Aride are national parks. Fees are collected on arrival and are not usually in the charter price.
