Yacht charter in United Kingdom

Highland landscape rather than villages, and one properly open loch. No licence needed; the locks are staffed.

   Handover and briefing; a short run along the summit stretch.

   Fort Augustus

   Down the flight of five locks into Loch Ness.

   Urquhart Castle / Drumnadrochit

   Halfway down the loch — take the morning for the crossing.

   Dochgarroch or Inverness

   The north-east end, where the canal reaches the sea.

   Back up Loch Ness — Foyers or Invermoriston

   The eastern shore is the quieter side.

   Fort Augustus

   Lock back up into the canal.

   Laggan

   Short run back through Loch Oich to base.

A lock every few miles and a town at the end of most of them. Gentler and busier than Scotland, and easier to improvise.

   Handover and briefing; drop down to Wallingford.

   Goring and Streatley

   Through the gap in the Chilterns.

   Reading or Sonning

   Sonning is the prettier mooring of the two.

   Henley-on-Thames

   The regatta reach; moor early in summer.

   Marlow or Cookham

   Below Cliveden Reach.

   Windsor

   Castle above the river; the usual turning point.

   Back upriver

   Either return to Benson over two days or arrange a one-way finish at Chertsey.
