The tide is real
Three to four metres

With streams in the ría mouths and the Tagus. Harbour entrances are better on a rising tide. Mediterranean habits do not transfer.

A hard northerly in summer

The prevailing wind on the Iberian Atlantic coast. South is easy, north is work — plan the return before you commit to the outbound leg.

Galicia is the sheltered half
The Rías Baixas

Deep fjord-like inlets with short hops and protected water. The better choice for a crew that wants Atlantic scenery without Atlantic passages.

Where to drop anchor in European Atlantic

    The Cíes islands

    Three islands closing the mouth of the Vigo ría, a national park with a beach often called the best in the world. Visitor numbers are capped and anchoring is regulated — arrange access through the base.

    Baiona

    Ten of our boats, in a walled harbour where one of Columbus's caravels first brought news back from the Americas. A fortress peninsula above the marina and the best base in Galicia.

    Ría de Pontevedra and Ría de Arousa

    North of Vigo: two more deep inlets with mussel rafts staked across them, villages at the head and the Ons islands offshore. Sheltered, and almost no charter traffic.

    Vigo

    Fifteen boats and Europe's largest fishing port, which is why the seafood here is what it is. Practical rather than pretty, and the market alone justifies a night.

    The Algarve cliffs

    From Portimão: a coast of ochre cliffs, sea caves and beaches reachable only by water — Benagil, Marinha, the coves west of Lagos. Open Atlantic, so settled weather matters.

    Lisbon and the Tagus

    Six boats at Belém under the monastery and the discoveries monument, with the river running past the city. The Tagus has real streams and the bar at its mouth deserves respect.

    Cascais and Sintra

    At the Tagus mouth, exposed to the Atlantic swell, with Sintra's palaces in the hills behind. Three of our boats and the staging point for a coastal passage.

The Rías Baixas from Baiona or Vigo

The most practical week in this basin: sheltered inlets, short legs, and the Cíes islands at the mouth. Tide matters but swell largely does not once you are inside a ría.

Open Atlantic coast rather than sheltered inlets. Shorter distances than Galicia but more exposure, so the forecast decides each day rather than the plan.

Before you book

Local rules and paperwork in European Atlantic

Skipper certificate
Required in Spain and Portugal, plus VHF. A recognised certificate such as an ICC, and a VHF operator's certificate held by someone aboard. Confirm which qualifications your operator accepts before booking.
Plan the return against the nortada
North is the hard direction. The prevailing summer northerly makes a southbound leg easy and the way back a beat. Do not spend the week running downwind and leave the return to Friday.
Tidal entrances
Take them on a rising tide. Three to four metres of range, with bars at some river mouths including the Tagus. The chart depth and the depth today are not the same number.
Cíes and Ons are national parks
Capped numbers, regulated anchoring. Both islands in the Vigo and Pontevedra rías require advance arrangement. The base handles it; it cannot be improvised on the day.
Atlantic swell
It arrives independently of local wind. A calm forecast can still mean a large residual swell on the Algarve and around Cape St Vincent. Check swell height and period, not just wind.
Confirm which coast
Galicia or Portugal. Vigo and Baiona are 600 km from Portimão. Different airports, different sailing, different week — check the base before booking flights.

About the destination

Why charter from European Atlantic

Forty-eight boats across three countries, and they sit on two quite different coasts about six hundred kilometres apart.

Twenty-five are in Galicia, at Vigo and Baiona in the Rías Baixas — deep, sheltered, fjord-like inlets cut into the north-west corner of Spain, with the Cíes islands closing the mouth of the Vigo ría as a national park. This is the gentler half: protected water, short hops, cool green landscape and some of the best seafood in Europe on the quay.

Ten are at Portimão in the Algarve, on Portugal's southern coast, which is open Atlantic with cliffs, sea caves and long beaches, and nine are around Lisbon at Belém and Cascais, on the Tagus and the exposed coast either side of it. Those are different sailing again.

Two things apply across the whole basin and neither is a Mediterranean habit. First, the tide is real — ranges of three to four metres, with streams in the ría mouths and the Tagus, and harbour entrances that are better taken on a rising tide. Second, the prevailing summer wind on the Iberian Atlantic coast is the northerly nortada, and it blows hard. Going south is easy; coming back north is the hard part of any route, and a week planned downwind without thinking about the return is the classic mistake here.

The fleet averages 12 metres with 29 monohulls, 11 catamarans and 8 motor yachts, and twelve of the 48 come with a skipper. Rates start at €745, which is remarkably low for Atlantic sailing. All 48 boats change over on a Saturday.
