Sailing conditions in Camargue

Why you come
Wildlife, not scenery

The Rhône delta is a biosphere reserve. Flamingos breed in the lagoons, and the white horses and black bulls are farmed on the marsh.

Changeover day
An even split — 18 Saturday, 18 Monday

The only region in our catalogue where the two are equal. Short breaks are as normal as full weeks.

Two bases, two landscapes
Lattes 23, Bellegarde 15

Lattes sits outside Montpellier on the canal behind the coastal lagoons. Bellegarde is north-east, on the link toward the Rhône.

The easiest water in France
Flat and almost lock-free

Long stretches with no locks at all. Combined with no licence requirement, this is the least demanding charter we list.

The mistral
It reaches down the delta

There is no sea here but the open lagoons build a short chop in a strong northerly. Worth checking before crossing an étang.

Season
April – October

Rates from €740. Spring brings the breeding flamingos; late summer is hot and brings mosquitoes on the marsh.

Worth the detour

Where to drop anchor in Camargue

  • 1

    Aigues-Mortes

A 13th-century town inside a complete ring of walls and towers, standing in the salt flats with the canal running past it. One of the few fully intact medieval enceintes in France, and you moor beneath it.

  • 2

    The salt pans

Beside Aigues-Mortes: shallow evaporation basins that turn pink from the algae the flamingos feed on. The colour is why the birds are the colour they are.

  • 3

    Étang de Thau

The largest of the coastal lagoons, west of the delta, with oyster and mussel beds staked across it. Shallow, open water and a different feel from the canal.

  • 4

    Sète

A working fishing port built across a canal-cut hill at the end of the Étang de Thau, with water jousting in summer and the best seafood on this coast.

  • 5

    Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer

The pilgrimage church on the delta shore, fortified and standing alone above the beach. The Roma pilgrimage each May is one of the great events in the south of France.

  • 6

    The Petite Camargue étangs

The lagoon country between Lattes and Aigues-Mortes, where the canal runs on an embankment with water on both sides and flamingos a few metres away.

  • 7

    Beaucaire and the Rhône link

North-east of Bellegarde, where the canal meets the Rhône below a ruined castle. The boundary between the delta and the river proper.

  • 8

Nîmes and the Pont du Gard

Inland from Bellegarde by bicycle or taxi: a Roman amphitheatre and the aqueduct bridge, both World Heritage sites. The best day ashore in the region.

Suggested routes

A week out of Camargue

The lagoons from Lattes

7 days

Flat water, few locks and birds all week. The canal runs behind the coastal lagoons and crosses several of them, which is where the flamingos are.

  1. 1

    Lattes

Handover and briefing outside Montpellier; short run into the lagoon country.

  2. 2

    Palavas or Carnon

The canal between the étangs and the sea; flamingos on both sides.

  3. 3

    Aigues-Mortes

East to the walled town; moor beneath the ramparts.

  4. 4

The salt pans and Le Grau-du-Roi

The pink basins and the fishing port at the canal mouth.

  5. 5

Back west — Étang de Thau

Across the big lagoon toward Sète; watch the wind.

  6. 6

    Sète or Marseillan

The oyster beds and the port cut through the hill.

  7. 7

    Lattes

Back east along the canal for handover.

The delta from Bellegarde

7 days

Starts inland and works south into the marsh, with the Roman sites of Nîmes and the Pont du Gard reachable on the first or last day.

  1. 1

    Bellegarde

Handover; the Pont du Gard is a short trip inland if you have the afternoon.

  2. 2

    Saint-Gilles

An abbey church with a carved Romanesque facade, on the edge of the marsh.

  3. 3

    Into the Petite Camargue

South-west through the étangs; the landscape opens out.

  4. 4

    Aigues-Mortes

The walled town and the salt pans — the far point.

  5. 5

    Le Grau-du-Roi or Palavas

The coastal end of the network.

  6. 6

    Back north-east

    Retracing through the lagoons.

  7. 7

    Bellegarde

    Final leg for handover.

Before you book

Local rules and paperwork in Camargue

Licence
Not required on hire boats. French exemption for boats limited to 15 km/h and under 15 metres. The handover briefing is the training.
Biosphere reserve
Stay on the navigable channels. Much of the delta is protected and the étangs have restricted areas for breeding birds. The base will mark what is open; the marsh either side of the canal is not yours to explore by boat.
Shallow lagoons
Stay in the marked routes. The étangs are wide and very shallow, with oyster and mussel staking in places. Crossing Thau in particular means following the channel.
The mistral
It builds a chop on open water. No sea, but a strong northerly makes the larger lagoons unpleasant. Check before committing to a crossing rather than after.
Mosquitoes
A real consideration in high summer. This is a marsh. July and August evenings on the étangs need repellent; spring and autumn are noticeably better.
Short breaks
Half the fleet changes over on a Monday. Three- and four-night bookings are standard here. Ask rather than assuming a full week.

Checked October 2026. Rules change — confirm the detail that matters for your trip when you book.

About the destination

Why charter from Camargue

The Camargue is the Rhône delta: a flat, salty, half-drowned landscape of lagoons and reed beds between the river's two arms, and the reason to take a boat here is wildlife rather than scenery in the usual sense. Flamingos breed in the étangs, white horses and black bulls are farmed on the marsh, and the whole delta is a biosphere reserve.

We list 38 boats, 21 of them houseboats and 17 motor cruisers, with no sailing boats. They sit at two bases on the same network but in different landscapes: 23 at Lattes, just outside Montpellier on the Canal du Rhône à Sète, which runs behind the coastal lagoons; and 15 at Bellegarde, north-east on the canal that links through to the Rhône. From Lattes you are in the lagoon country within an hour. From Bellegarde you work south through the delta toward it.

The changeover pattern is worth noting: 18 boats hand over on a Saturday and 18 on a Monday, with two on Friday. That is an even split and the only one in our catalogue — short breaks here are exactly as normal as full weeks.

The canal itself is dead flat and almost lock-free for long stretches, which makes this the least demanding water in France. What it is not is pretty in the Burgundy sense. The appeal is the étangs, Aigues-Mortes' complete medieval walls rising out of the salt flats, the Saintes-Maries pilgrimage church on the shore, and birds in numbers you will not see anywhere else in Europe.

No licence is needed on boats limited to 15 km/h and under 15 metres, and rates start at €740. Season April to October; the mistral blows down the delta and can make the open lagoons uncomfortable even though there is no sea to speak of.
