On the water

Sailing conditions in Ionian

The wind
Maïstro, NW, mild and daily

Late May to late September. Nothing before about 11:00, a steady medium breeze through the afternoon, then it drops before dusk. Reliable enough to plan the day around.

No meltemi
The defining difference from the Aegean

The Ionian sits outside the meltemi system entirely. That is why it suits first-time skippers and families in a way the Cyclades do not.

Sea state
Almost always flat

Lefkada and Kefalonia shelter the southern Ionian from open water. Short fetch, little swell, land in sight.

Where the fleet is
Lefkada, then Corfu

About 600 boats at Lefkada across the D-Marin marina and the town port, 213 at Gouvia on Corfu, around 120 at Preveza.

Typical boat
Monohull, 13.3 m

770 sailing yachts against 426 catamarans, averaging 4.2 cabins and a 2018 build year. Weekly rates from about €1,030 — among the cheapest in the Mediterranean.

Changeover day
Saturday, mostly

1,184 boats hand over on Saturday, 37 on Sunday and 3 on Friday. Worth confirming on the specific boat.

Worth the detour

Where to drop anchor in Ionian

  • 1

    Lefkada and the canal

The base for half the fleet. The island is joined to the mainland by a causeway and a canal with a swing bridge that opens on the hour — your first and last obstacle of the week, and a useful lesson in planning around a timetable.

  • 2

    Meganisi

Immediately south-east of Lefkada: a low island with deep fjord-like inlets — Port Atheni, Abelike, Spartochori. The classic first night, forty minutes from base.

  • 3

    Fiskardo, Kefalonia

The one Kefalonian village that survived the 1953 earthquake, so it still has its Venetian houses. The prettiest harbour in the Ionian and the busiest — arrive by mid-afternoon or take the bay outside.

  • 4

    Ithaca — Vathi and Kioni

Homer's island, and a deep natural harbour at Vathi that holds anything. Kioni on the north-east coast is smaller and quieter, with three ruined windmills over the entrance.

  • 5

    Kalamos and Kastos

Two small islands east of Meganisi with almost nothing on them. Kalamos village quay is one of the few places left where the taverna owner takes your lines.

  • 6

    Sivota, Lefkada

A near-landlocked bay on the island's south coast, ringed with tavernas. Completely protected and consequently full every evening in August.

  • 7

    Corfu and the north

Gouvia is the second base. Corfu town is a Venetian old town and a UNESCO site, and the north-east coast toward Kassiopi is a run of small coves. The Albanian coast is a mile or two off.

  • 8

    Paxos and Antipaxos

Between Corfu and Lefkada: Lakka and Gaios are two of the best harbours in the region, and Antipaxos has the clearest water. The natural stepping stone if you are sailing between the two bases.

Suggested routes

A week out of Ionian

The inner Ionian from Lefkada

7 days

The standard Ionian week and the reason the region has the reputation it does: two to four hours a day, flat water, a different village every evening, and the maïstro doing the work each afternoon.

  1. 1

    Lefkada

Saturday handover; through the canal bridge and south to Meganisi.

  2. 2

Meganisi — Port Atheni or Abelike

    Deep inlets, long lines ashore.

  3. 3

    Kalamos or Kastos

East to the quiet islands; village quays.

  4. 4

    Ithaca — Kioni or Vathi

    South-west across to Ithaca.

  5. 5

    Fiskardo, Kefalonia

The short hop across the strait — arrive early for a berth.

  6. 6

    Sivota, Lefkada

North again to the landlocked bay on Lefkada's south coast.

  7. 7

    Lefkada

Round the island or back through the canal for handover.

Corfu, Paxos and the north

7 days

From Gouvia instead of Lefkada. Slightly longer legs, fewer boats, and two of the best small harbours in Greece at Lakka and Gaios.

  1. 1

    Gouvia, Corfu

Handover; short move to Corfu town or the north-east coast.

  2. 2

    Kassiopi or Agios Stefanos

North-east Corfu, with the Albanian coast across the strait.

  3. 3

    Lakka, Paxos

South across the channel to a near-circular bay.

  4. 4

    Gaios, Paxos and Antipaxos

Round the island; the clearest water in the Ionian.

  5. 5

Parga or Two Rock Bay, mainland

East to the mainland coast under the castle.

  6. 6

Back north — Petriti or Benitses

Southern Corfu, out of the way of the ferries.

  7. 7

    Gouvia

    Short leg back for handover.

Before you book

Local rules and paperwork in Ionian

Skipper certificate
Required, plus a VHF certificate. Greece asks for a recognised sailing qualification for bareboat and a VHF operator's certificate held by someone aboard, as well as a second competent adult crew member. The same rules as the rest of the country.
The Lefkada canal bridge
It opens on the hour. The floating bridge across the canal is the only way in and out of Lefkada town from the north. Plan the first and last legs around the opening rather than the distance.
Mooring style
Stern-to on quays, long lines in the bays. Village quays are stern- or bows-to with your own anchor, and the sheltered inlets on Meganisi and Lefkada are deep enough that you take a line ashore. Both are worth practising on day one.
August on the quays
Arrive by mid-afternoon. Fiskardo, Sivota and Kioni fill early in July and August. The anchorages outside them stay usable, so the fallback is a bay rather than a different island.
Albanian waters
A border, a mile off northern Corfu. Crossing into Albanian waters means clearing in and out, and most charter agreements do not permit it. Stay on the Greek side unless the operator has agreed otherwise in writing.
Season
May – October The maïstro runs from late May to late September. April and October still sail but the wind becomes a weather system rather than a daily pattern.

Checked October 2026. Rules change — confirm the detail that matters for your trip when you book.

About the destination

Why charter from Ionian

The Ionian is where people learn to charter, and the reason is a wind called the maïstro. From late May to late September it blows a mild north-westerly with a daily rhythm you can genuinely set a watch by: nothing before about eleven in the morning, then a steady medium breeze that builds through the afternoon, then sleep shortly before dusk. You get a real sail every day and you get it in daylight, in the same direction, at a strength that forgives mistakes.

Geography does the rest. Lefkada and Kefalonia shelter the southern Ionian from the open sea, so you are almost always sailing in flat water with land in sight on several sides. The distances are short — most legs are two to four hours — and the next anchorage is usually visible from the one you are leaving. There is no meltemi here. That single absence is what separates this from the Aegean.

It is also the densest charter base in Greece outside Athens. Of 1,224 boats, roughly 600 lie at Lefkada between the D-Marin marina and the town quay, with another 213 at Gouvia on Corfu and about 120 around Preveza. Monohulls still dominate at 770 against 426 catamarans, averaging 13.3 metres and 4.2 cabins, with weekly rates starting around €1,030.

One scheduling note: changeover is Saturday on 1,184 boats, but 37 hand over on Sunday. Check yours before booking flights.
