On the water

Sailing conditions in Gulf of Taranto

A new base
2023 average build year

The newest average fleet in our catalogue. Four catamarans, one marina — recently established rather than a mature market.

Where this is
The Ionian side of Puglia

Taranto sits in the gulf at the arch of Italy's foot. The cruising runs west and south along a coast charter has largely skipped.

The appeal
Empty water

Not spectacular scenery but genuinely uncrowded — long sandy beaches, low cliffs and anchorages with nobody in them, which is rare in this sea now.

Narrow choice
Four similar boats

Averaging 12.4 m and 3.8 cabins, with rates in a tight band of €4,850 to €6,850. Availability rather than selection is the constraint.

Season
May – October

Southern Italy, so the shoulders are warm. July and August are hot and the Italian holiday month of August is the busiest ashore.

Changeover day
Saturday

All four boats.

Worth the detour

Where to drop anchor in Gulf of Taranto

  • 1

    Taranto's two seas

The Mar Grande opening to the gulf and the Mar Piccolo behind it — a near-enclosed lagoon used for mussel farming, reached through a channel under a swing bridge in the middle of the city.

  • 2

    The MArTA museum

Taranto's national archaeological museum holds the finest collection of Magna Graecia gold anywhere. The city was Taras, a Spartan colony, and it shows.

  • 3

    Campomarino and Porto Cesareo

West along the Ionian coast: shallow sandy bays with islets offshore and a marine protected area at Porto Cesareo. The standard first destinations.

  • 4

    Gallipoli

An old town on an island joined to the mainland by a bridge, further south-east down the coast. The most attractive harbour in reach and a realistic far point.

  • 5

    Santa Maria di Leuca

The very tip of Italy's heel, where the Ionian meets the Adriatic, with sea caves along the cliffs either side. A committed week rather than a casual one.

  • 6

    The Porto Cesareo marine reserve

Shallow water, seagrass and small islands, protected. Anchoring is regulated to preserve the posidonia — take a buoy where one is laid.

  • 7

    Matera, inland

Not a sailing destination but the best day ashore from Taranto: a cave city carved into a ravine, a World Heritage site, about an hour inland.

  • 8

    What is not here

Islands, marinas every few miles, and crowds. Plan for self-sufficiency and fewer harbour options than a Croatian or Greek week.

Suggested routes

A week out of Gulf of Taranto

West along the Ionian coast

7 days

A coastal week with few harbours and a lot of empty beach. Watch the forecast — this shore is open to the south-west and there is less shelter than in an archipelago.

  1. 1

    Taranto

Saturday handover; the Mar Piccolo and the museum before leaving.

  2. 2

    Campomarino

West along the gulf; sandy bays and shallow water.

  3. 3

    Porto Cesareo

The marine protected area; islets offshore and regulated anchoring.

  4. 4

    Gallipoli

South-east to the island old town — the best harbour in reach.

  5. 5

Santa Maria di Leuca or back north

The heel of Italy if the weather allows; otherwise start the return.

  6. 6

    Porto Cesareo or Campomarino

    Working back along the coast.

  7. 7

    Taranto

Final leg into the Mar Grande for handover.

Before you book

Local rules and paperwork in Gulf of Taranto

Skipper certificate
Required, plus a VHF certificate. Italy asks for a recognised sailing qualification for bareboat and a VHF operator's certificate held by someone aboard.
Fewer harbours than you expect
Plan the day accordingly. This coast has long gaps between marinas. Know where the next shelter is before you leave the last one, and do not count on finding something mid-afternoon.
Porto Cesareo reserve
Anchoring is regulated. Seagrass is protected and buoys are laid in places. Take one where it exists rather than choosing your own spot.
Exposure to the south-west
The gulf is open. Less shelter here than in an island cruising ground. A south-westerly makes much of this coast uncomfortable, so watch the forecast rather than the chart.
The swing bridge
Between the two seas at Taranto. Entry to the Mar Piccolo is through a channel under a bridge that opens on a schedule. Relevant only if your berth is inside it — check with the base.
Four boats
Enquire before booking flights. One base, one changeover day and four similar boats. Bari and Brindisi are the airports; availability is the binding constraint.

Checked October 2026. Rules change — confirm the detail that matters for your trip when you book.

Availability

How full is the calendar in Gulf of Taranto?

Share of the Gulf of Taranto fleet that already holds at least one reservation, for each of the next twelve months. Taken from the operators' own calendars and refreshed daily — a boat with one week booked can still be chartered in the others.

Months further out look emptier simply because they are further away — most charters are booked a few months ahead, not a year.

About the destination

Why charter from Gulf of Taranto

Four catamarans at Taranto, averaging 12.4 metres with a 2023 build year — the newest average fleet in our entire catalogue. That figure tells you what this is: a recently established base rather than a mature charter market, in a part of the Mediterranean that charter has largely skipped.

Taranto sits in the great gulf at the arch of Italy's foot, on the Ionian side of Puglia. The city has two basins: the Mar Grande, open to the gulf, and the Mar Piccolo behind it, a near-enclosed lagoon used for mussel farming and reached through a channel under a swing bridge. It is a working naval port with a Greek foundation — Taras was a Spartan colony — and the national archaeological museum holds the best collection of Magna Graecia gold anywhere.

The cruising is along the Ionian coast of Puglia, west and south: Campomarino, Porto Cesareo and eventually Gallipoli, with long sandy beaches, low cliffs and water that is clear because almost nobody is in it. This is the honest appeal — not spectacular, but genuinely empty in a sea where that is now rare. Santa Maria di Leuca at the very tip of the heel, where the Ionian meets the Adriatic, is the far point of a committed week.

Four boats, one base and a narrow price band of €4,850 to €6,850 mean the practical constraints are availability and choice rather than route planning. Enquire before you book flights to Bari or Brindisi.

Italian rules apply: a recognised sailing certificate and a VHF operator's certificate for bareboat. The season runs May to October, and all four boats change over on a Saturday.
