On the water

Sailing conditions in Marmaris / Fethiye / Gocek

The wind
Light and friendly — not the Gökova meltemi

The Fethiye–Göcek gulf is effectively landlocked and well sheltered. Expect a gentle afternoon breeze; the strong meltemi felt further west is not a factor here.

Sea state
Flat in almost any wind

Pine slopes drop straight into the water on three sides. This is the most protected cruising ground in Turkey.

Season
April – October

Seven nights is the standard charter. July and August are hottest and busiest; May, June, September and October are the better sailing months.

Where the fleet is

120 boats at Ece Marina in Fethiye, 46 at Albatros, 45 at Netsel Marmaris, 38 at Adaköy, 33 at Marmaris Yacht Marina and 32 at Göcek.

50 of the 534 boats

Broad wooden motorsailers with crew, native to this coast. More deck space and a cook; less sailing. The answer for a large group.

Worth the detour

Where to drop anchor in Marmaris / Fethiye / Gocek

  • 1

    The Twelve Islands, Göcek

Scattered across the sheltered bay off the town. The count is a convention rather than a survey, but they sit close enough together to make one unhurried day's sailing, with a different anchorage every couple of hours.

  • 2

    Göcek itself

A small harbour town that exists largely for boats, with several marinas and a short waterfront. The usual place to provision, and the most convenient base for the islands.

  • 3

    Fethiye

The largest town on this coast, at the head of its own gulf, with Ece Marina and the rock-cut Lycian tombs in the cliff above the centre. A hundred and twenty of our boats are based here.

  • 4

    Ölüdeniz

The lagoon south-west of Fethiye, and the image on most Turkish tourism posters. The lagoon itself is closed to yachts — you anchor off the beach outside it and go in on foot.

  • 5

    Butterfly Valley

A steep-sided cove between Ölüdeniz and Kabak, reachable only by boat or a serious descent. Day anchorage in settled weather; exposed if there is any southerly.

  • 6

    Ekincik and the Dalyan delta

West toward Marmaris: anchor at Ekincik and take a local boat up the reed channels to the Lycian rock tombs at Kaunos and the turtle beach at İztuzu. The best shore excursion on the coast.

  • 7

    Marmaris and Hisarönü

Marmaris sits in a deep almost circular bay with three marinas. West of it the Hisarönü gulf is where the wind picks up — this is the edge of the breezier Gökova country.

  • 8

    Across to Rhodes and Symi

The Greek islands are close enough to see from Marmaris. Crossing is a genuine border with a transit log at each end, so confirm your charter agreement allows it before planning it in.

Before you book

Local rules and paperwork in Marmaris / Fethiye / Gocek

Skipper certificate
Required for bareboat. Turkey asks for a recognised sailing qualification. Confirm which certificates your operator accepts before booking, and send it over early.
Crossing to Greece
A border, with a transit log each way. Rhodes and Symi are close enough to tempt you from Marmaris, but it means clearing out of Turkey and into Greece and back. Many charter agreements do not permit it — check in writing first.
Ölüdeniz lagoon
Closed to yachts. The lagoon is a protected area and boats stay outside. Anchor off the open beach and walk in; the photograph everyone has seen is taken from the land.
Pontoon restaurants
Free mooring in exchange for dinner. Many of the bays here have a restaurant with its own pontoon and no berthing charge if you eat ashore. It is the local convention rather than a trick, and it is how most evenings work.
Gulet or sailing yacht
Decide which product you want. A crewed gulet is a different holiday from a bareboat yacht — more space, a cook, fixed itinerary flexibility, and little actual sailing. Fifty of the boats here are gulets, so both are genuinely available.
Westward is windier
Hisarönü and Gökova are a different sea. If you want breeze rather than shelter, head west of Marmaris. The further you go that way, the more the meltemi matters — which is the opposite of what the Göcek gulf offers.

Checked October 2026. Rules change — confirm the detail that matters for your trip when you book.

About the destination

Why charter from Marmaris / Fethiye / Gocek

This stretch of the Turkish south-west is the country's most sheltered cruising ground, and it is worth correcting a common assumption before anything else: the strong meltemi that shapes sailing further west around Gökova is not really a factor here. The Fethiye–Göcek gulf is almost landlocked, ringed by pine-covered slopes that drop straight into the water, and the wind in it is generally light and friendly — a gentle afternoon breeze rather than something to plan a week around. The water stays flat in almost any conditions.

That makes it the closest thing Turkey has to the Ionian: short hops, protected anchorages, and a bay every hour. The set piece is the group off Göcek that everyone calls the Twelve Islands, though the number is a convention rather than a count — depending on which rocks and headlands you include the tally shifts. What matters is that they lie close enough together to be strung into a single day's sailing, which is exactly how they are visited.

The fleet of 534 boats splits between Fethiye, Göcek and Marmaris, with Ece Marina at Fethiye the largest single base at 120 boats. Fifty of the 534 are gulets — the broad-beamed wooden motorsailers that are a genuine local category here rather than an import, and the obvious answer for a large group that wants deck space and a cook more than sailing performance. Monohulls still lead at 315, with 150 catamarans, averaging 14.7 metres and 4.1 cabins.

The season runs April to October and a week is the standard unit. If you want to cross to the Greek islands opposite — Rhodes and Symi are close — that is a border, with a transit-log formality on each side.
