Worth the detour

Where to drop anchor in Šibenik

  • 1

    Zlarin and Prvić

Two small car-free islands immediately off Šibenik, with villages on the water and no traffic at all. The easiest first night from Vinišće.

  • 2

    Žirje and Kaprije

Further out in the Šibenik archipelago, larger and emptier. Žirje has a Byzantine fort and a handful of houses; both are among the quietest anchorages in Dalmatia.

  • 3

The Šibenik channel and St Anthony

A narrow cut through the hills into Šibenik's bay, fortified on both sides. One of the most dramatic harbour approaches in Croatia, and the city is a World Heritage cathedral town.

  • 4

    Skradin and the Krka falls

Up the river from Šibenik — you can take the boat as far as Skradin and the waterfalls are a short trip beyond. Fresh water, a national park and a complete change from the islands.

  • 5

    Rogoznica

South-east of Vinišće, with Marina Frapa and the Dragon's Eye — a collapsed karst lake beside the sea with brackish water in it.

  • 6

    Trogir

A World Heritage town on its own island half an hour south-east, between the mainland and Čiovo. Closer to Vinišće than Šibenik is.

  • 7

    Šolta and the Split channel

Further south-east: Maslinica on Šolta's western end has a marina in a restored castle, and beyond it the Brač channel opens the Split cruising ground.

  • 8

    The Kornati

A day north-west: 89 islands of bare limestone inside a national park. Our Kornati page covers the park tickets and the mooring rules.

Suggested routes

A week out of Šibenik

The Šibenik archipelago from Vinišće

7 days

Short legs among dense islands, with the Krka river as the contrast and the Kornati reachable if you want it. At €776 a week this is the cheapest way into Croatian sailing.

  1. 1

    Vinišće

Saturday handover in the bay; a short hop to settle in.

  2. 2

    Rogoznica

South-east; the Dragon's Eye lake beside the marina.

  3. 3

    Zlarin or Prvić

North-west to the car-free islands off Šibenik.

  4. 4

    Skradin

Through the Šibenik channel and up the Krka to the falls.

  5. 5

    Žirje or Kaprije

Back out to the archipelago; the emptiest anchorages here.

  6. 6

    Trogir or Maslinica

    South-east toward the Split islands.

  7. 7

    Vinišće

    Short leg back for handover.

Local rules and paperwork in Šibenik

Skipper certificate
Required, plus a VHF certificate. Croatia asks for a recognised sailing qualification and a VHF operator's certificate for bareboat charter. Both boats here are bareboat.
Read the Kornati page
That is where the Šibenik fleet is. 945 boats including Marina Mandalina. This page covers two boats that sit outside that grouping, at a different base.
Kornati and Krka have tickets
If your route includes them. The Kornati national park charges entry and mooring; Krka charges separately. Buy the Kornati ticket online in advance — it is considerably cheaper than on the water.
The bura
Plan shelter before you need it. It blows strongest in the channels and can come up fast. Know which island shore you would run to on any given day.
Vinišće is small
Provision at Trogir or Šibenik. The bay has little ashore. Load up before you leave or plan the first night somewhere with a shop.
Two boats
Enquire early. Two identical-priced monohulls at one small base. At this price they go first — be flexible on dates.

About the destination

Why charter from Šibenik

Two sailing yachts at €776 a week each — among the cheapest sailing charters anywhere in our catalogue — and two clarifications before you read further.

Neither is in Šibenik. Both are at Vinišće, a small bay on the coast between Šibenik and Trogir and rather closer to the latter. And this is not the Šibenik fleet: the boats that charter out of Šibenik proper, including the 157 at D-Marin Mandalina, sit under our Kornati region, which holds 945 boats in total. If you want a Šibenik base, that is the page.

What is here is two 11.4-metre monohulls with three cabins and a 2008 build year, both bareboat. At that price they are the entry point to Croatian sailing, and the water they sit on is the reason it works: Vinišće is in the middle of one of the densest island clusters in the Adriatic, with the Šibenik archipelago to the north-west, the Trogir and Split islands to the south-east, and the Kornati a day away.

The immediate neighbourhood is genuinely good. Zlarin and Prvić are small car-free islands off Šibenik; Žirje and Kaprije are further out with almost nobody on them. South-east, Šolta and the Brač channel open the Split cruising ground. North-west, the Šibenik channel leads past the St Anthony fortifications into the city and then up the Krka river to Skradin, below the waterfalls.

Croatian rules apply: a recognised sailing certificate plus a VHF operator's certificate. The bura blows hardest in the channels, and the inner shores of the islands are the shelter. Both boats change over on a Saturday.
